Established in 1975 and headquartered in Paris, ESA has more than 2000 staff worldwide. The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.
ESA's space flight programme includes human spaceflight (mainly through participation in the International Space Station program); the launch and operation of unmanned exploration missions to other planets and the Moon; Earth observation, science and telecommunication; designing launch vehicles; and maintaining a major spaceport, the Guiana Space Centre at Kourou, French Guiana.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization: The job posting organization is the European Space Agency (ESA), which was established to provide for and promote cooperation among European countries in the field of space research and technology. ESA's mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. The agency operates in multiple countries across Europe and has a workforce of over 2,200 employees. ESA is known for its commitment to innovation and excellence in space exploration, Earth observation, and satellite technology, and it collaborates with various international organizations and research institutions.
Job Overview: The Internal Research Fellow (PostDoc) position in Geospatial Foundation Models for Earth Observation (EO) is designed for individuals who are passionate about advancing the field of Earth observation through innovative research. The successful candidate will work within the ESA Φ-lab, which is dedicated to accelerating the future of EO by integrating disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and quantum computing. The role involves conducting advanced research activities that explore the use of geospatial foundation models tailored to multimodal and multiscale EO datasets. The fellow will be expected to develop new frameworks and solutions that enhance the understanding of complex environmental systems and contribute to climate resilience and sustainability. The position offers a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse team of researchers and to collaborate with leading experts in the field, while also providing the freedom to conduct creative research that aligns with ESA's strategic goals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Internal Research Fellow include: conducting advanced research on geospatial AI foundation models for EO; exploring innovative methodologies and technologies; developing novel methods for implementing new technologies, such as machine learning models, for high-level EO products; contributing to the development and curation of open datasets and tools for the research community; supporting rapid prototyping activities and research sprints; participating in internal research sprints to validate novel EO concepts and algorithms; engaging with the innovation ecosystem to promote new techniques; publishing research outcomes in high-impact journals; collaborating with the Φ-lab community and ESA teams; maintaining dialogue with the scientific community; and supporting the Φ-lab’s daily activities and mentoring of young researchers.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have a strong background in relevant fields such as data science, AI, computer science, machine learning, Earth system science, or climate. They should have completed or be close to completing a PhD within the past five years, with a thesis relevant to the tasks outlined. Additionally, candidates should possess sound knowledge of EO, AI, ML, and ICT revolution technologies, proven experience in geospatial foundation models, and the ability to think creatively and explore new research avenues. Proficiency in one or more general-purpose programming languages, such as Python, and familiarity with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch are also required. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for working in a multicultural environment.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a completed or nearly completed PhD in a relevant field such as data science, AI, computer science, machine learning, Earth system science, or climate. The candidate's thesis should be closely related to the tasks and research areas outlined in the job description, demonstrating a solid understanding of the principles and applications of these disciplines.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a proven track record of research and publication in relevant fields, particularly in geospatial foundation models. Candidates should have experience conducting independent research and a breadth of exposure from past research activities. The ability to gather and share relevant information and a general interest in space and space research are also important for this role.
Languages: The mandatory language for this position is English, as it is one of the working languages of the Agency. A good knowledge of French is also required. Knowledge of another language from an ESA Member State would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate and collaborate in a diverse environment.
Additional Notes: This position is a full-time appointment as an Internal Research Fellow and is open to nationals of ESA Member States, Associate Member States, and Cooperating States. The application process requires candidates to submit a CV, a motivation letter, and a research proposal of no more than five pages. The proposal should address an EO challenge using foundation models and outline the importance of the research to society. The deadline for applications is 6 January 2026 at 23:59 CET/CEST.
