Job Overview:
The role of the Project Driver is crucial for the effective implementation of Plan International's initiatives in Kakuma, Turkana County. The driver will be responsible for all transport-related duties, ensuring safe and timely transportation of staff, goods, and correspondences as per the project travel implementation plans. The driver will also be entrusted with the organization’s vehicles, which are considered high-value assets, and will need to maintain a high level of conduct on the road. This position requires a reliable individual who can manage transportation logistics efficiently while adhering to safety protocols and organizational policies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Project Driver will have several key responsibilities, including:
  • Transportation (50%): Providing safe, efficient, and timely transportation for staff and designated individuals to various locations as instructed. This includes transporting goods to required points and ensuring that all Plan International assets are safeguarded during transit. The driver must maintain an updated vehicle log book to track usage and execute office errands to facilitate smooth project operations.
  • Maintenance (30%): Ensuring the vehicle is well-maintained and clean to avoid breakdowns and ensure passenger comfort. This includes keeping the vehicle equipped with a valid first aid kit, working safety belts, fire extinguishers, and valid local licenses. The driver must also ensure the vehicle is parked safely at the end of each working day and report any incidents or accidents immediately.
  • Compliance (10%): Adhering to transport and corporate policies to ensure efficiency and harmony with other departments and government regulations. The driver must maintain a valid driving license and promote Plan International’s policies, including safeguarding children and young people.
  • Safeguarding (5%): Ensuring compliance with Plan International’s global safeguarding policies and promoting awareness among staff and associates regarding their responsibilities under these policies.
  • Others (5%): Performing any other duties assigned by the supervisor as needed.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for the Project Driver position must possess the following qualifications:
  • An O level certificate holder.
  • A minimum of 5 years of driving experience in a busy working environment.
  • A valid driving license for Class B, C, and E vehicles.
  • Basic mechanic skills (Grade 3) to handle minor vehicle issues.
  • A valid certificate of good conduct.
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili is essential for effective communication. Additionally, defensive driving training is desirable but not mandatory.

Educational Background:
Candidates applying for the Project Driver position should have at least an O level certificate. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate has the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for the role, particularly in understanding road safety regulations and vehicle operation.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of driving experience is required for this position, particularly in a busy working environment. This experience is crucial as it ensures that the candidate is familiar with the challenges of driving in various conditions and can handle the responsibilities associated with transporting staff and goods safely and efficiently.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Kiswahili is mandatory for this position, as effective communication is essential for coordinating transportation and ensuring the safety of passengers. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
