Job Description
Job Posting Organization: The UNDP Country Office in Botswana is dedicated to supporting the Government and People of Botswana in their development journey towards achieving the goals outlined in Vision 203
Established to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Corporation Framework (2022-2026), the UNDP Country Office implements its mission through the Country Programme Document (CPD). This program aims to provide strategic advisory support while also delivering interventions that engage directly with communities, promoting a greener, more just, and prosperous Botswana. The office operates with a focus on economic diversification, local economic development, and private sector support, particularly in rural areas, to address issues such as income inequality and unemployment among youth.
Job Overview: The Community Development Officer will play a crucial role in supporting the Prosperity Portfolio by promoting initiatives aimed at economic diversification and local economic development. This position is particularly focused on supporting the Government of Botswana's decentralization reform process, which aims to ensure more equitable development across communities. The officer will be responsible for implementing and rolling out rural development initiatives, particularly in light of the challenges posed by rising youth unemployment in rural areas. The successful candidate will work closely with Project Managers of the Prosperity Portfolio to roll out community-level initiatives, ensuring that local needs are understood and addressed through active community participation and capacity building.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Community Development Officer will undertake a variety of tasks, including: developing robust programs in collaboration with stakeholders and partners; planning, implementing, and monitoring development initiatives; working directly with communities to assess their needs and ensure their participation; advising on resource mobilization and partnership development; and collaborating with program teams and government officials to ensure effective project implementation. Additionally, the officer will be expected to strengthen their understanding of volunteerism, participate in UNV activities, contribute to publications, assist with the UNV Buddy Programme, and promote online volunteering.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong competencies in accountability, adaptability, client orientation, communication, creativity, and professionalism. They should demonstrate the ability to build trust, empower others, and manage performance effectively. A commitment to ethics and values, respect for diversity, and the ability to work in teams are also essential. The role requires a mature level of cultural awareness and the ability to work in potentially challenging conditions.
Educational Background: A relevant educational background is required, typically including a degree in social sciences, development studies, or a related field. Candidates should have a strong understanding of local governance, economic development, and community engagement principles.
Experience: Candidates should have prior experience in community development, local governance, or related fields. Experience working with government agencies, NGOs, or international organizations is highly desirable. Familiarity with rural development initiatives and economic diversification strategies will be an advantage.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the UNDP. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Botswana would be considered an asset, as it would facilitate better communication with local communities.
Additional Notes: This position is a volunteer role under the UNV program, and candidates should be prepared for a commitment that may involve working in climatically harsh conditions. The role is full-time and may require flexibility in working hours. The living conditions in Botswana are generally stable, with access to medical facilities, schools, and banking services in urban areas. However, candidates should be aware of the cultural nuances and be prepared for a unique living experience.
