Job Overview:
The OPENLAB Summer Student Programme at CERN offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a vibrant scientific community where they can contribute to real projects in the fields of IT and software engineering. Duties and Responsibilities:
As a summer student, you will be responsible for contributing to a technical or scientific project within an IT team at CERN. Your duties will include participating in discussions and workshops, attending lectures delivered by leading scientists, and sharing your learning experiences with fellow students. You will also have the opportunity to visit CERN's unique facilities, gaining insights into cutting-edge research and technology. Collaboration with team members and active participation in all programme activities will be essential to maximize your learning experience during the summer.

Required Qualifications:
To be eligible for the OPENLAB Summer Student Programme, candidates must be Bachelor’s or Master’s students (not PhD candidates) with a strong computing profile. Applicants should have completed at least 6 semesters (3 academic years) of full-time university studies in IT or Software Engineering by the start of the summer. Additionally, candidates must not have worked at CERN for more than 3 months under any other status and should not have previously participated in the Summer Student Programme. A good command of English is required, and students must remain enrolled as full-time students until the start of their summer at CERN.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be pursuing a degree in IT or Software Engineering, having completed a minimum of 6 semesters of full-time university studies. This educational background ensures that students possess the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to contribute effectively to the projects at CERN.

Experience:
While prior work experience is not mandatory, candidates should demonstrate a strong computing profile and a proactive approach to learning. The programme is designed for students who are eager to gain hands-on experience and collaborate with others in an international environment.

Languages:
A good knowledge of English is mandatory for all applicants. Proficiency in French is a plus but not required. Effective communication skills are essential for collaboration within the multicultural team at CERN.

Additional Notes:
The OPENLAB Summer Student Programme is a fully onsite opportunity with an ideal start date of June 22, 2026, and a contract duration of 2 months. Students will work 40 hours per week and will receive a subsistence allowance of 93 CHF per calendar day, which is tax-free. Participants will also be covered by CERN’s comprehensive health insurance scheme, and travel expenses to Geneva may be reimbursed depending on individual circumstances.
