European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) About
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With a mission to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe, CERN employs thousands of scientists, engineers, and support staff from over 100 countries. The organization operates in multiple countries and is known for its cutting-edge research in particle physics, utilizing the world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). CERN's commitment to diversity and inclusion is a core value, fostering a collaborative environment that enhances scientific discovery.
Job Overview: The Geodetic Metrology Engineer position at CERN involves participating in the metrology and alignment of various components used in particle physics experiments. The role requires the use of advanced surveying tools and software to achieve sub-millimeter accuracy, which is crucial for the success of experiments. After an initial training period, the engineer will engage in 3D measurements for maintaining geodetic networks and ensuring the precise alignment of physics detectors. The position also includes responsibilities such as organizing and executing measurements, processing data, documenting results, and presenting findings in technical meetings. The engineer will contribute to software validation and provide feedback to enhance survey procedures and methods, making this role integral to the operational success of CERN's experiments.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Geodetic Metrology Engineer include:
Performing 3D measurements for the maintenance of geodetic networks and geometrical follow-up of assemblies.
Adjusting and aligning detectors with respect to the established geodetic network.
Participating in the organization and execution of field measurements and data capture.
Contributing to data processing and documentation of measurements.
Presenting results in technical meetings and collaborating with team members.
Engaging in in-house software test validation and providing constructive feedback to improve survey field procedures and methods.
Utilizing survey instruments such as laser trackers, total stations, and 3D laser scanners effectively.
Applying knowledge of least squares adjustment and stochastic analysis to geodetic and dimensional problems.
Maintaining good organization and communication skills while working collaboratively in a team environment. 1
Being open to learning and applying new techniques in digital close-range photogrammetry and programming languages such as MATLAB and Python.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in high accuracy geodetic metrology and possess a keen attention to detail. They should have practical experience with instruments and methods used in high accuracy geodetic metrology, as well as theoretical knowledge of least square-based algorithms. The ideal candidate will have good organizational and communication skills, a sense of responsibility, and the ability to work effectively in a team. Familiarity with digital close-range photogrammetry, 3D laser scanning, and programming experience in languages like MATLAB and Python is considered beneficial.
Educational Background: Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in topography, geodesy, surveying, geomatics, or a related field. Candidates without a university degree are not eligible for this position, and those with a PhD are also not eligible. The educational qualification must be obtained before the application deadline.
Experience: Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the relevant fields of topography, geodesy, surveying, or geomatics. This experience should be directly related to the responsibilities of the position and demonstrate the candidate's capability to perform the required tasks effectively.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse environment at CERN.
Additional Notes: The position is fully onsite and involves a contract duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the target start date for the position is April 1, 202
The role may require work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and residence in proximity to CERN's facilities. A valid driving license is necessary, and the position may involve working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required by the organization's needs. The job reference for this position is BE-GM-ESA-2025-240-GRAE, and it falls under the field of Mechanical Engineering with a benchmark job classification of 200090 - Mechanical Engineer. Compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 5196 to 5716 Swiss Francs (net of tax), comprehensive health coverage, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances, along with 30 days of paid leave per year.
