Job Overview:
The Laboratory Technologist position is crucial for providing technical support to laboratory services related to Migration Health Assessments and other programs at the IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre in Pretoria, South Africa. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Chief Migration Health Officer and the Senior Laboratory Technologist, ensuring that laboratory procedures are performed accurately and efficiently. The role involves adhering to strict quality management systems, maintaining biosafety standards, and ensuring timely delivery of laboratory results. The Laboratory Technologist will also be responsible for managing laboratory equipment, stock, and documentation, contributing to the overall improvement of laboratory services, and ensuring compliance with IOM standards and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Laboratory Technologist include performing laboratory procedures as assigned, contributing to the implementation of quality management systems, taking on focal point roles for quality system essentials, ensuring compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and adhering to biosafety measures. The incumbent will organize and operate activities on assigned stations, perform quality control and assurance activities, facilitate equipment maintenance, manage laboratory stock, and alert supervisors to any operational issues. Additionally, the Laboratory Technologist will maintain organized record-keeping systems, develop or update SOPs, participate in service system improvements, manage client expectations, and undertake mandatory training as required. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Radiologic Technology from an accredited institution, with a valid license to practice Radiography in South Africa. A minimum of three years of working experience is required for those with a Bachelor’s degree, while diploma holders should have at least five years of experience. Knowledge and experience in radiographic techniques, procedures, safety, quality management processes, and digital machines are essential. Familiarity with radiology information systems and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) is also required, along with experience in screening chest X-rays and Health Assessment Programs.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Radiologic Technology. The degree must be from an accredited academic institution, and the candidate must fulfill the scope of responsibilities according to national regulations. A valid license to practice Radiography in South Africa is mandatory for this role.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a minimum of three years of relevant working experience for those holding a Bachelor’s degree, and five years for those with a Diploma. Experience should specifically include work in radiography, particularly with Chest X-Rays, and familiarity with quality management processes in a laboratory setting is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory. Additionally, proficiency in common local languages spoken in South Africa is considered beneficial for this role, as it enhances communication with diverse populations.

Additional Notes:
The appointment for this position is subject to funding confirmation and certification of medical fitness. Candidates must also undergo verification of residency, visa, and other necessary authorizations by the relevant government authorities. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan for the duration of the consultancy, but does not offer evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational issues.
