Job Overview:

Interns will work full-time, either in-person in Addis Ababa or remotely, and are expected to contribute to various projects and initiatives within the organization. The internship will commence on November 5, 2025, and will last for an initial period of three months. Interns will receive training and mentoring throughout their time at UNCTAD, allowing them to gain valuable insights into the workings of an international organization. The role involves assisting in the dissemination of UNCTAD's research, updating social media platforms, drafting articles, and developing communication products for diverse audiences. Interns will also have the opportunity to engage in media outreach and support the organization of events such as conferences and seminars.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall mission of UNCTAD. These include:
  • Assisting in organizing dissemination activities for UNCTAD's research.
  • Updating social media platforms and running campaigns on priority issues.
  • Producing short videos, animated clips, and graphics for campaigns.
  • Drafting news articles and updating office databases.
  • Conducting internet-based research and compiling information related to UNCTAD's work.
  • Developing communication products such as press releases, reports, brochures, and newsletters.
  • Contributing to the implementation of the office's communications strategy.
  • Preparing initial drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters and reports.
  • Identifying key contacts and opportunities for strategic partnerships. 1
  • Organizing conferences, seminars, and outreach events, and preparing briefing materials for senior officials. Interns are also expected to adhere to UN regulations and maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Additionally, candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations. They should also possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes a university degree in journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field. This academic foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of international trade and development issues that UNCTAD addresses.

Experience:

The UN does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and there is no expectation of employment following the internship. Interns are not eligible to apply for professional positions within the UN for six months after completing their internship.
