Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN's mission is to advance knowledge and understanding of the universe through high-energy physics research. The organization has a diverse workforce and operates in multiple countries, welcoming applications from all Member States and Associate Member States. CERN is known for its collaborative environment and commitment to diversity, which has been a core value since its inception.
Job Overview: The position of Accelerator Magnet Modelling Engineer at CERN is designed for enthusiastic engineers with a keen interest in advanced electromagnet technology and particle accelerators. The role is situated within the Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) group of CERN’s Technology Department (TE), which is responsible for the design, construction, and operational support of all beam line magnets in the CERN accelerator complex. The Magnetic Measurement and Modelling Section (MMM) focuses on developing innovative tools for mathematical field modelling, precision magnetic measurements, and material characterization. As an Accelerator Magnet Modelling Engineer, you will be tasked with advancing, validating, and applying modelling tools and techniques to optimize the design and performance of CERN’s accelerator magnets, contributing significantly to the future of particle physics research.
Duties and Responsibilities: As an Accelerator Magnet Modelling Engineer, your responsibilities will include: developing and validating analytical and numerical models to represent magnetic fields in accelerator magnets; collaborating with magnet designers and measurement experts to analyze measurement data; maintaining and developing software applications for the design of resistive and superconducting accelerator magnets; ensuring the long-term usability of these applications; implementing model-based methods to enhance the accuracy of magnetic field results; preparing technical documentation, reports, and training materials related to modelling and analysis tools; and contributing to the metrological characterization of magnets and associated instrumentation to validate developed models.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience. Proven experience in computer-assisted design and modelling of resistive or superconducting accelerator magnets or related electromechanical devices is essential. Familiarity with construction, testing, or operation of electromagnets and magnetic measurement techniques is considered an asset. Technical competencies should include knowledge of computational methods in electromagnetism, such as FEM or BEM approaches, and experience in the design and modelling of normal conducting magnets and permanent magnet systems.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. Candidates should have a strong foundation in electromagnetism and related disciplines, which is crucial for the development and validation of models used in accelerator magnet technology.
Experience: The ideal candidate will have proven experience in the field of computer-assisted design and modelling of accelerator magnets or similar electromechanical devices. Experience with numerical simulation tools and techniques is critical, as is familiarity with the construction, testing, and operation of electromagnets. Candidates should also have experience in magnetic measurement techniques and the ability to integrate and analyze measurement data against numerical models.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates must demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is beneficial for communication within the organization and the local community.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position under certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the role may involve stand-by duty as required by the organization's needs. Candidates should be aware that the position involves operations on electrical installations or in their vicinity, which require specific authorizations. Additionally, exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain conditions is part of the job, and selected candidates must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed. The job grade for this position is 6-7, and the job reference is TE-MSC-MMM-2025-183-LD.
