Job Overview: The Cultural Mediator position is crucial in the context of IOM Greece's efforts to support unaccompanied minors (UMC) who are migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. The successful candidate will play a vital role in facilitating communication between UMC and IOM staff, as well as with state authorities and local stakeholders. This role requires a deep understanding of the cultural and social dynamics affecting UMC, as well as the ability to provide tailored support and interventions. The Cultural Mediator will assist in the adjustment of UMC to their new environment, ensuring they receive necessary information and access to services, including medical care. The position demands flexibility and a commitment to the well-being of vulnerable populations, as well as the ability to work under pressure in a multi-cultural environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Facilitate communication between UMC and IOM staff through interpretation and translation into Arabic, both orally and in writing.
Assist in gathering social history information from UMC to determine their best interests.
Act as a cultural mediator to help UMC adjust to their new environment.
Provide interpretation services to UMC when accessing medical services and other public services.
Translate informational materials for UMC to ensure they understand their rights and available services.
Support the staff in understanding the perceptions and needs of migrants.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong communication skills, particularly in Arabic, Greek, and English. They should demonstrate flexibility, conflict resolution skills, and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment. Computer literacy in standard software applications is considered an asset. A valid driver's license with at least five years of driving experience is also advantageous. Candidates should be willing to work during mornings, evenings, holidays, and weekends as required by the job.
Educational Background: A high school diploma is considered an advantage, and relevant training or certification in areas related to migration, social work, or child protection will be taken into consideration. Candidates with educational backgrounds from accredited universities listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database will be preferred.
Experience: Previous experience in a similar role is preferred, particularly within an IOM Emergency Accommodation Facility. Familiarity with direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees is advantageous, as is experience working in a multi-cultural environment. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to the values of IOM and the ability to work effectively with vulnerable populations.
Languages: Fluency in Greek and/or English (both written and oral) is required. Fluency in Arabic (both written and oral) is also required. A working knowledge of French (written and oral) is considered an advantage. Proficiency in the required languages will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, and only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Greece will be eligible for consideration. The appointment will be contingent upon medical fitness certification, verification of residency, and compliance with government regulations.
