Established in 1950, UNHCR operates in over 130 countries, providing assistance and support to millions of people worldwide. The organization aims to ensure that everyone has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another country, and it works to promote durable solutions for refugees, including voluntary repatriation, local integration, and resettlement. UNHCR's mission is to safeguard the rights of refugees and to help them rebuild their lives, with a focus on providing protection, assistance, and solutions to those in need. In Greece, UNHCR plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges faced by asylum-seekers and refugees, advocating for their rights and working closely with government authorities, civil society, and other stakeholders to enhance protection and support mechanisms.
Job Overview: The Fellow position at UNHCR Greece is designed for eligible students from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, specifically those enrolled in the MSc programme 'Media and Refugee/Migration Flows.' The role offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience within an international organization while contributing to UNHCR's core mandate of protecting refugees and asylum-seekers. The Fellow will work under the supervision of the Associate Operations Officer and will be involved in various activities that support the organization's mission. This includes assisting in the organization of coordination meetings, collecting and consolidating data for reports, and supporting awareness-raising activities related to refugee issues. The Fellow will also monitor media coverage of UNHCR's mandate and provide administrative support to ensure the smooth functioning of the Unit. This position is ideal for individuals interested in humanitarian work and refugee-related issues, providing a platform to develop skills and knowledge in a real-world context.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Fellow will be responsible for a range of duties, including but not limited to: organizing and implementing coordination meetings, preparing agendas, taking minutes, maintaining mailing lists, and sending invitations. The Fellow will assist in collecting information and consolidating data for periodic reports, such as statistical snapshots, and preparing background briefings or briefing kits for visitors. Additionally, the Fellow will support the organization of awareness-raising activities for International Days, such as International Women's Day and World Refugee Day. The role also involves contributing to the planning and implementation of various projects undertaken by the Unit, monitoring online, print, and social media for major developments related to UNHCR's mandate, and providing routine administrative support to facilitate the smooth functioning of the Unit. Furthermore, the Fellow will contribute to the production of Communicating with Communities (CWC) materials that inform refugees and asylum-seekers about their rights, procedures, and available services across different locations.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an excellent command of both Greek and English, with strong writing, editing, and analytical skills. An interest in humanitarian and refugee-related issues is essential. Previous experience in communication or fundraising projects is considered an asset. The ideal candidate should demonstrate resourcefulness, creativity, and innovation, along with a willingness to learn. Attention to detail and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment are crucial. Additionally, skills in photo and video editing, as well as graphic design, are desirable but not mandatory.
Educational Background: The position is targeted at students enrolled in the MSc programme 'Media and Refugee/Migration Flows' at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. This educational background is essential as it aligns with the responsibilities of the Fellow role, providing the necessary theoretical knowledge and understanding of media and refugee issues that will be applied in practice during the fellowship.
Experience: While specific prior experience is not mandatory, any previous involvement in communication, media, or fundraising projects will be beneficial. The role is designed for students, so the expectation is to provide practical experience rather than requiring extensive professional background. However, candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in humanitarian work and a proactive approach to learning and contributing to the organization's goals.
Languages: The mandatory languages for this position are Greek and English, both of which must be spoken and written fluently. Proficiency in these languages is critical for effective communication within the organization and with external stakeholders. While not required, knowledge of additional languages could be advantageous, particularly those commonly spoken by refugee populations in Greece.
Additional Notes: This position is classified as a Fellow role, which typically does not require a functional clearance. The position is not remote, and it is expected that the Fellow will work on-site in Athens. The contract duration aligns with the academic schedule and the specific terms of the fellowship program. This role is designed for students, thus it is part-time, allowing for flexibility to accommodate academic commitments. Compensation details and benefits, if any, will be provided during the application process.
