Job Overview: The consultancy position involves leading a comprehensive survey and data collection effort aimed at evaluating the impact of digital agricultural advisory services provided by Crop2Cash in Northern Nigeria. The selected firm will be responsible for implementing quantitative and qualitative data collection activities, including face-to-face interviews with farmers and key informant interviews with stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The firm will work closely with IFPRI to design the survey instruments and select study locations, ensuring that the data collected is robust and relevant to the evaluation objectives. The overall goal is to assess the effectiveness of the digital advisory services and their commercial sustainability, as well as to understand the broader agricultural landscape in which these services operate.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the consultancy include:
Leading the survey data collection process, including face-to-face, computer-assisted interviews with approximately 1,400 to 1,800 individuals.
Conducting qualitative interviews with key stakeholders, including Crop2Cash leadership, extension agents, businesses, and farmers who have engaged with the service.
Organizing focus group discussions with farmers to gather insights on their experiences and challenges.
Translating survey instruments and interview guides into local languages as necessary.
Obtaining necessary ethics clearances and local research permits.
Mobilizing and training experienced enumerators for data collection.
Developing a field schedule and providing regular updates during the data collection phase.
Conducting data cleaning and ensuring the integrity of the data collected.
Delivering a final report that summarizes the findings from both quantitative and qualitative data collection efforts.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative survey fieldwork in Nigeria within the last five years. Preference will be given to those with experience in implementing impact evaluation studies. Candidates should have a strong understanding of the local context and languages in the target areas, as well as experience in building relationships with community leaders and interviewees. Strong program management skills and the ability to coordinate large field teams are essential. Proficiency in using computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) and statistical software packages is required, along with experience in obtaining local ethics review and permits.
Educational Background: A relevant educational background in social sciences, agricultural economics, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should possess a strong understanding of research methodologies and data collection techniques, particularly in the context of agricultural studies.
Experience: The position requires a demonstrated track record of experience in conducting surveys and evaluations, particularly in the agricultural sector. Candidates should have experience managing field teams and delivering high-quality data collection outcomes. Familiarity with the specific challenges and opportunities in Northern Nigeria's agricultural landscape is highly desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in local languages spoken in the target areas is highly advantageous. This will facilitate effective communication with survey participants and stakeholders.
