Job Overview:
The director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Deputy Director, Strategy, Planning & Management (DDSPM) will play a pivotal role in the Gates Foundation’s U.S. Program (USP), which aims to ensure equitable access to educational opportunities for all students in the U.S. The DDSPM will be responsible for leading strategic and operational planning, overseeing the execution of integrated program areas, and guiding performance management and strategic planning efforts. This position requires a leader who can navigate complex challenges and collaborate effectively to drive transformational change in educational pathways for students, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in performance management, change management, and U.S. education, with a focus on supporting students from low-income backgrounds and communities of color. The role also involves managing direct reports, fostering a culture of feedback and coaching, and ensuring alignment on objectives across the team.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The DDSPM will be responsible for ongoing strategy development and progress monitoring, evaluating core processes, and cultivating insights to communicate portfolio allocation and progress. They will oversee the alignment of objectives, metrics, and targets throughout the portfolio, leveraging data and rapid-cycle learning to inform strategic decisions. The role includes developing and executing a portfolio management approach that ensures effective stewardship and resource allocation, as well as establishing a risk-management routine to track and mitigate financial, reputational, and programmatic risks. The DDSPM will provide feedback and advisory support to program teams on major grants, oversee the rhythm of business across the team, and manage knowledge management and process improvement initiatives. Additionally, the DDSPM will work with the Director to design organizational structures, promote culture and values, and facilitate collaboration within the team. They will also champion the use of common data infrastructure and emerging technologies, model equitable decision-making, and address escalated issues in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have at least 10 years of related experience, particularly in U.S. secondary and/or postsecondary education. An advanced degree is preferred, ideally an MBA, although relevant work experience may substitute for formal education. Candidates should possess deep knowledge of strategy development and execution, as well as experience in designing performance management systems. A demonstrated ability in portfolio design and management is essential, along with proven strengths in structured problem-solving and strategic business planning. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, as well as the ability to build consensus and lead teams effectively. Candidates must also demonstrate a passion for the Foundation’s values and a commitment to delivering results aligned with its mission.

Educational Background:
An advanced degree is preferred for this position, with an MBA being ideal. However, candidates with significant relevant work experience that demonstrates their knowledge in strategy, operations, financial management, and people management may also be considered. The educational background should reflect a strong foundation in areas pertinent to the responsibilities of the role, particularly in education, management, or related fields.

Experience:
