Job Overview: The Cultural Facilitator for the Our Yarning initiative plays a crucial role in promoting cultural integrity and literacy among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Australia. This position involves liaising with Indigenous communities to support the publication of their stories, providing cultural advice on manuscripts and illustrations, and collaborating with the Our Yarning Coordinator to deliver cultural training to educators. The role is designed to drive the production of culturally authentic children's stories, thereby supporting inclusion and literacy across Australia. The Cultural Facilitator will also contribute to the operational processes of the Our Yarning initiative, ensuring that the stories reflect the cultural identity of the community and spark a love of reading among children.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Cultural Facilitator will be responsible for several key duties, including:
Liaising with Indigenous communities to gather and support the publication of their stories, ensuring cultural authenticity and integrity.
Providing cultural advice on manuscript texts and illustrations to ensure they accurately represent the community's voice.
Collaborating with the Our Yarning Coordinator to develop and deliver cultural training programs for educators, enhancing their understanding of Indigenous cultures.
Managing Cultural and Intellectual Property (CIP) issues related to the stories published through the initiative.
Supporting the learning, assessment, and advocacy efforts of the Our Yarning initiative to promote its goals and objectives.
Contributing to the operational processes of the initiative, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of programs.
Leading workshops and community engagement activities to foster relationships and promote the initiative's objectives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Cultural Facilitator position should possess a deep understanding of cultural protocols and community engagement, particularly within Indigenous contexts. They should demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups. Experience in cultural facilitation, mediation, and workshop delivery is essential. Additionally, candidates should have a commitment to promoting inclusion and literacy among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
Educational Background: A relevant educational background in Indigenous studies, cultural studies, education, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have formal training or qualifications that demonstrate their understanding of cultural protocols and community engagement practices.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have significant experience working with Indigenous communities, particularly in roles that involve cultural facilitation, community engagement, or education. Experience in publishing, storytelling, or literacy programs is highly desirable, as is a proven track record of building authentic relationships within diverse communities.
