FHI 360's Crisis Response team is actively engaged in addressing humanitarian emergencies, such as the ongoing crisis in Northern Ethiopia, where they implement integrated health, nutrition, WASH, and protection projects to meet the urgent needs of conflict-affected populations. The organization is now looking to expand its efforts to the Somali Region in Eastern Ethiopia to assist drought-affected communities through collaborative humanitarian programming with local partners like Pastoralist Concern (PC).

Job Overview:
The Driver position at FHI 360 is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient transportation services for staff and visitors. The primary responsibilities include transporting project staff, consultants, and visitors to designated locations while maintaining the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security for the vehicle. The Driver is expected to perform daily maintenance checks on the vehicle, ensuring it is in good working condition and reporting any issues promptly. This role requires adherence to Ethiopian traffic laws and FHI 360's vehicle policies, as well as providing assistance to clients during their entry and exit from the vehicle. The Driver will also be responsible for planning routes based on schedules or ad-hoc requests, ensuring that all passengers comply with road safety regulations. This position is essential for supporting the organization's mission by facilitating the mobility of its personnel in a safe and reliable manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver will be responsible for the following key duties and responsibilities:
  • Operate the vehicle to ensure safe transportation of clients as needed.
  • Ensure that all passengers wear seat belts during transportation.
  • Drive the vehicle within acceptable speed limits as per Ethiopian traffic laws.
  • Adhere strictly to FHI 360 vehicle policies and security standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Conduct daily and pre-long-distance vehicle checks, documenting findings and reporting to transport staff.
  • Maintain an accurate vehicle log sheet, ensuring users sign it for each trip.
  • Keep the vehicle clean, fueled, and mechanically sound, reporting any defaults on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.
  • Inspect and maintain all vehicle accessories to ensure they are operational.
  • Conduct quarterly validity checks on onboard documentation, including insurance and driving licenses, and report daily vehicle defects. 1
  • Assist clients during entry and exit from vehicles and provide other courtesies as necessary. 1
  • Assume responsibility for the care and maintenance of the vehicle, including timely oil changes, inspections, brakes, and tire pressure checks. 1
  • Arrange for major repairs when needed. 1
  • Ensure all required documents related to the vehicle are in order and up to date. 1
  • Plan routes and requirements based on schedules or ad-hoc requests from the office. 1
  • Ensure that all passengers adhere to road safety regulations. 1
  • Fulfill special requests by picking up and delivering items as directed and running errands. 1
  • May be required to protect clients in locations deemed high risk.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for the Driver position should possess the following qualifications:
  • Proven experience driving in challenging terrain conditions and mountainous areas.
  • A mature, hardworking, enthusiastic, and helpful demeanor towards people.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to identify and recognize problems that have established procedures and limited impact.
  • Ability to refer non-standard questions and problems to a higher level for resolution.
  • Capability to detect errors quickly within the immediate work unit, resulting in only minor disruption or expense to correct.
  • General supervision and instructions will be provided for routine work, with detailed instructions and periodic reviews for new activities or special assignments.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have a minimum of secondary school education or an equivalent qualification. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate possesses the necessary foundational knowledge and skills required for the role.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 5 years of experience as a driver, preferably with a government or international organization. Experience in driving four-wheel drive vehicles is essential. Additionally, candidates must hold a valid Grade 3 driving license and possess a trade test certificate, along with a clean driving record. Experience in operating large vehicles or an equivalent combination of experience and training is also desirable.

Languages:
The position requires proficiency in the local language, which is essential for effective communication with clients and staff. Knowledge of English is also mandatory, as it is often used in organizational communications and documentation. Additional languages may be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to interact with a diverse range of individuals.

This position is based in Axum, Ethiopia, and there are two vacancies available. The role may involve travel requirements of less than 10-25%.
