ESCAP was established in 1947 and is one of the regional commissions of the United Nations. The organization focuses on promoting economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region, with a mission to foster inclusive and sustainable development. ESCAP operates in multiple countries across the Asia-Pacific region, working with governments, civil society, and other stakeholders to address pressing social and economic issues. The organization employs a diverse workforce dedicated to advancing the United Nations' goals and ideals.

Job Overview:
The internship in the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Section (GESIS) of the Social Development Division is designed for individuals who are passionate about gender equality and women's empowerment. The internship lasts between three to six months, during which interns will support various projects related to gender equality, including those focused on the care economy and entrepreneurship. Interns will engage in research and data analysis on critical areas concerning gender equality, such as economic participation and leadership roles. They will also assist in organizing meetings and workshops, contribute to written outputs, and provide support for technical cooperation projects aimed at women's economic empowerment and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The role requires a commitment to the ideals of the United Nations and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams. Interns will work full-time, five days a week, under the supervision of a staff member in the GESIS section, with a structured schedule from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks that may include conducting research and data analysis on gender equality and women's empowerment, assisting in the organization of meetings and workshops, and contributing to the preparation of written materials such as background papers, speeches, and presentations. They will also be involved in data visualization efforts and provide substantive support for the implementation of technical cooperation projects. Other duties may be assigned by the Chief of Section, depending on the intern's background and the specific needs of the section. Interns are expected to demonstrate effective communication skills, teamwork, and client orientation while managing their tasks efficiently.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program (second university degree or equivalent) or be enrolled in or have completed the final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level). Candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals. They should also possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and beliefs, showing a willingness to understand and respect different opinions. Competencies in communication, teamwork, client orientation, and planning and organizing are essential for this role.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a background in social sciences, gender studies, international relations, or a related field. A graduate degree or a bachelor's degree nearing completion is required, with a focus on areas relevant to gender equality and social inclusion.

Experience:
No prior working experience is required to apply for the internship; however, experience in research, writing, and organizing workshops would be advantageous. Familiarity with issues related to gender equality and women's empowerment, particularly in the context of the care economy or entrepreneurship, is also beneficial. Interns who have previously interned for six months under UN Secretariat entities are not eligible for re-hire unless they have obtained a different or advanced degree.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for the internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language or another language from the Asia-Pacific region is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's profile for the position.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of 37.5 hours per week. Interns will work under the supervision of a staff member in the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Section. The internship can be conducted either remotely or in Bangkok, depending on the arrangements made with the hiring manager. Candidates should be aware that they are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. The application process requires a completed online application, including a Cover Note and Candidate Profile, detailing the candidate's qualifications and interest in the internship. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further consideration. The United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.
