ESCAP was established in 1947 and is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. The organization aims to promote economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on sustainable development, gender equality, and social inclusion. ESCAP operates in 62 member states and associate members, working collaboratively to address regional challenges and promote inclusive growth. The organization employs a diverse workforce, including professionals from various backgrounds and expertise, dedicated to advancing the UN's mission in the region.
Job Overview: The internship position is within the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Section (GESIS) of the Social Development Division. The primary focus of this internship is to support communications work related to gender equality and women's empowerment. Interns will engage in various tasks that align with their skills and interests, contributing to the overall mission of GESIS. The internship is designed to provide practical experience in a UN setting, allowing interns to develop their skills in communication, research, and event organization. Interns will work full-time for a minimum of three months, with the possibility of extending up to six months. The working hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with a 45-minute lunch break, and interns will be supervised by a staff member in the GESIS section.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a range of tasks, including but not limited to: drafting content for public information materials such as social media posts, website content, news stories, and blogs; producing multimedia materials like infographics, presentation slides, event flyers, backdrops, banners, and short videos; coordinating internal communications with ESCAP's gender focal point network; participating in United Nations system-wide focal point meetings; conducting research and compiling information for reports; assisting in organizing and convening events such as commemorations, meetings, seminars, and workshops; providing photography and video coverage as needed; and performing other duties as assigned by the Chief of Section. The internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of gender equality and social inclusion while contributing to meaningful projects.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Additionally, applicants should have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and beliefs, showing a willingness to understand and tolerate different opinions and views. Previous interns who have completed six months under UN Secretariat entities are not eligible for re-hire unless they have obtained a different or advanced degree.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes either being currently enrolled in or having completed a graduate program or being in the final year of a bachelor's degree program. This ensures that candidates possess the necessary academic foundation to engage with the complex issues surrounding gender equality and social inclusion. The internship is particularly suited for students or recent graduates in fields such as social sciences, gender studies, international relations, communications, or related disciplines.
Experience: No prior working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, experience in research and writing, organizing workshops and meetings, or working on issues related to gender equality and women's empowerment will be considered an asset. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their ability to summarize information effectively for speeches, analytical papers, and presentations in a timely manner. This internship is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain practical experience in a UN environment and develop their professional skills.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for the internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language or another language from the Asia-Pacific region is considered an asset. This linguistic requirement ensures that interns can effectively communicate and engage with diverse stakeholders within the UN system and the broader community.
Additional Notes: The internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Thailand may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship. The application process requires a completed online application, including a Cover Note and Candidate Profile. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. The Cover Note must include details such as the title of the degree being pursued, graduation date, availability for the internship, IT skills, areas of interest, and reasons for being the best candidate for the internship. Due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further consideration. It is important to note that the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
