Job Overview:
The Protection Specialist is a pivotal role within NRC's Protection from Violence programme in South Sudan, which was established in 2022 to address the urgent humanitarian needs of vulnerable populations. The specialist is responsible for the Design, development, and implementation of protection strategies and activities, ensuring they align with NRC's global direction and local priorities. This role involves providing strategic advice, Technical Support, and Capacity Building to field staff, as well as fostering strong relationships with various stakeholders, including government actors, UN agencies, and other NGOs. The Protection Specialist will lead efforts to identify priority protection issues and develop effective responses, ensuring that all interventions comply with international standards and NRC policies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Protection Specialist will oversee the start-up and management of the Protection from Violence programme, ensuring that it is effectively integrated into NRC's broader country strategy. Key responsibilities include providing technical guidance for programme implementation, ensuring compliance with NRC policies, and contributing to Fundraising efforts by developing proposals and budgets. The specialist will also monitor project implementation, analyze data for continuous improvement, and ensure that all protection interventions meet international standards. Additionally, the role involves representing NRC in external Coordination meetings, promoting collaboration with other protection actors, and ensuring that the protection needs of affected populations are prioritized and addressed.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess at least five years of experience in humanitarian protection programming, with a minimum of three years in a senior project or programme management role. A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as law or social sciences is required, while an advanced academic qualification is preferred. Applicants should have a clear understanding of protection issues, legal frameworks, and professional standards in humanitarian contexts, as well as knowledge of international Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. Experience in protracted emergencies and knowledge of the South Sudan context will be advantageous. Strong skills in Information Management, coordination, and the ability to work under pressure are essential.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a bachelor's degree in law, social sciences, or a related discipline. An advanced degree in a relevant field will be considered an added advantage, as it demonstrates a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in humanitarian protection work. Candidates should also have a solid grasp of legal frameworks and policies relevant to protection issues, particularly in the context of humanitarian crises.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of experience in humanitarian protection programming, with at least three years in a senior management role. Candidates should have a proven track record of implementing and overseeing specialized protection services, as well as experience in developing and managing protection programmes in complex and volatile environments. Familiarity with the South Sudan context and previous experience in protracted emergencies will be beneficial for applicants.
Languages:
Fluency in English, both written and verbal, is mandatory for this position. Strong communication skills are essential for effective collaboration with diverse stakeholders and for the preparation of reports and proposals. While English is the primary language required, knowledge of additional languages relevant to the South Sudan context may be considered an asset, enhancing the ability to engage with local communities and partners.
Additional Notes:
This position is based in Juba, South Sudan, and is offered as an international contract for a duration of 12 months, with the possibility of extension. The role may require travel of up to 30% within the country. The salary and benefits are based on NRC's international salary scale, specifically at grade
