Job Overview:
The Urban Development and Housing Intern will be engaged in a six-month internship based in Libreville, Gabon, focusing on housing, spatial planning, and environmental management. The intern will work under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer responsible for the Central Africa Sub Regional Office. This position is designed to provide practical experience in urban development and housing, emphasizing the importance of sustainable urbanization. The intern will assist in identifying community opportunities, supporting project concepts, and engaging with stakeholders. The role will involve collaboration with various partners and donors, contributing to the implementation of UN-Habitat's initiatives in Gabon, and enhancing the visibility of the organization's programs through effective communication and outreach efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will perform a variety of tasks, including: assisting in identifying community opportunities and translating challenges into project concepts; supporting resource mobilization efforts; preparing meetings with potential partners and donors; developing communication and outreach tools; tracking key indicators and compiling data; assisting in preparing layouts and design drawings for urban projects; supporting fieldwork related to urban development; contributing to policy research and drafting reports; assisting in capacity-building activities and stakeholder engagement; producing knowledge products and case studies; developing communication materials; providing administrative support for events; and performing miscellaneous assignments as needed. The intern will also be responsible for making PowerPoint presentations during workshops and meetings, ensuring effective communication with stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or have graduated with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree. Candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly Microsoft Office Suite. A keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals are essential. Additionally, applicants should demonstrate the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing tolerance and understanding of differing opinions.
Educational Background:
The preferred areas of study for applicants include Architecture, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Community Mobilization, Public Health, and Geography. Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs. Proof of enrollment or graduation will be required during the application process.
Experience:
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, applicants should have a field of study closely related to urban development and housing. The internship is designed for students or recent graduates who are looking to gain practical experience in the field and contribute to UN-Habitat's mission.
Languages:
Fluency in oral and written French is required for this internship position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
