Job Overview: The Climate Program at WRI India is focused on developing modern, research-based, and integrated solutions that facilitate a low-carbon transition in India. This transition is designed to be equitable and just, ensuring the protection of natural resources while addressing climate change. The program employs applied research, utilizes various frameworks and tools, and collaborates with partners for ground-level implementation to achieve significant impact. The intern will play a vital role in the Advanced Scenario Carbon Emissions Navigation Tool (ASCENT), an Excel-based tool designed to assist subnational governments in tracking emissions, developing mitigation scenarios, and planning climate strategies. The intern's responsibilities will include enhancing the tool's functionality, ensuring it remains user-friendly and data-driven, and relevant to policymakers. This role is crucial in supporting the ongoing work of ASCENT and contributing to effective climate action planning.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at improving the ASCENT tool. These include refining the tool's interface, usability, and features to better serve users. The intern will assist in enhancing the visual layout, formatting, and design elements to improve usability and navigation. They will also work on designing intuitive features within the Excel environment, such as drop-down menus, conditional formatting, and tooltips. Additionally, the intern will develop and research strategies for sectoral emissions reductions, support pilot testing with subnational governments, gather user feedback, and incorporate necessary improvements. Documenting changes and providing clear guidelines for users on how to effectively utilize the tool will also be part of the intern's responsibilities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a postgraduate degree or be currently pursuing one in fields such as environmental science, public policy, engineering, economics, climate studies, or related disciplines. The ideal candidate should have 0-2 years of experience in research, data analysis, emissions accounting, or climate policy. Strong analytical skills are essential, along with a solid understanding of climate action planning and emissions modeling. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, particularly in making user interface improvements using Macros and VBA, is required. Additionally, candidates should have experience in data visualization using Tableau and Excel. Familiarity with GHG accounting frameworks such as IPCC and GPC, as well as knowledge of subnational climate action planning, is considered a plus.
Educational Background: A postgraduate degree or ongoing studies in environmental science, public policy, engineering, economics, climate studies, or related fields is required for this position. This educational background will provide the necessary foundation for understanding the complexities of climate change and the tools used for emissions accounting and climate strategy development.
