The United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) was established in 1971 through an agreement between the UN and the Government of Japan. The organization aims to serve as a training and research center in regional development and planning for developing countries. It provides advisory services, promotes the exchange of data on research and practical experiences, and cooperates with other organizations concerned with regional development. UNCRD focuses on sustainable regional development, particularly in the context of globalization and environmental issues, aligning its efforts with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is located in the Environment Unit of UNCRD in Nagoya, Japan. The intern will report to the Environment Programme Coordinator and will be involved in organizing significant regional forums, such as the Regional EST Forum in Asia and the Regional 3R and Circular Economy in Asia and the Pacific. Responsibilities include updating invitee lists, preparing and dispatching invitations, compiling information from participating countries, and supporting research for project-related papers and reports. The intern will also assist in analyzing data and preparing presentations for the forums, contributing to the overall mission of promoting sustainable development in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's primary duties will include:
  • Updating and maintaining lists of invitees for regional forums.
  • Assisting in the preparation and dispatch of invitations to participating countries and stakeholders.
  • Compiling electronic information received from countries and experts for upload to UNCRD’s webpages.
  • Supporting research efforts by collecting data from various resources.
  • Assisting in the review and analysis of data related to projects.
  • Helping prepare presentations for UNCRD’s participation in forums.
  • Engaging in discussions about sustainable development, particularly in the areas of sustainable transport and circular economy.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, such as a Master’s degree or Ph.D.); or (b) Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Candidates should have a background in environmental management, urban planning, urban development, waste management, or a related field. Additionally, applicants should demonstrate how their studies relate to Sustainable Development, particularly in sustainable transport and circular economy.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a graduate degree or be in the final year of their undergraduate studies, with a focus on fields relevant to the internship such as environmental management, urban planning, or waste management. This educational background is essential to ensure that the intern can effectively contribute to the projects and discussions at UNCRD.

Experience:
While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This could include internships, volunteer work, or projects related to environmental management or urban development.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for the internship. Knowledge of additional official United Nations languages, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's application.

The internship is expected to last for three months, from July 1 to September 30, 2025, with flexibility regarding start and end dates. There is potential for extension up to six months, and the modality can be adjusted based on the successful candidate's requests. It is important to note that interns are not financially compensated by the United Nations, and all costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions.
