Job Overview: The Associate Communications Officer is responsible for maintaining relationships with management and other communications specialists within the UN system, as well as with external partners such as government officials, civil society, and media. This role involves planning and coordinating communication activities, supporting reporting efforts, and providing updates on activities. The officer will also engage in training activities related to communications and support the Crisis Management Team when necessary. The position is critical in building and managing partnerships, coordinating events, and ensuring effective communication strategies that align with the UN's objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will perform a variety of duties including:
Implementing communication strategies to raise awareness and drive engagement.
Drafting and producing communication products like press releases and reports.
Developing strategic communications partnerships.
Creating content for UN and community radio channels.
Preparing reports for governmental bodies.
Developing digital communication strategies.
Ensuring consistency in messaging across digital channels.
Developing authoritative content for public perception shaping. 1

Collaborating with stakeholders for joint activities. 1
Supporting promotional item design and delivery. 1

Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong presentation, strategic thinking, and public speaking skills. They should have a solid understanding of sustainable development theories and the ability to analyze data for decision-making. The role requires a commitment to gender perspectives and equal participation in all areas of work. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, efficiency, and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining a high standard of integrity and competence.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, digital communications, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. Completion of programs in data analytics or related fields is advantageous.
Experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in developing and implementing communications strategies is required. Candidates should have experience in partnership engagement strategies and working with international donors. Excellent writing and communication skills are essential, along with experience in digital platforms and brand management. Experience in data analytics is desirable.
Languages: Fluency in both English and Dutch is required for this position. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (reading, writing, speaking, understanding).
Additional Notes: This is a fixed-term limited position for an initial period of one year, subject to availability of funds and budgetary approval. The position is open to nationals of Suriname, and candidates residing elsewhere may be considered if no suitable local candidates are found.
