Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Development System, reformed under the leadership of the UN Secretary-General since January 1, 2019, aims to effectively support countries in achieving their development priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO) play a crucial role in this mission, with the Resident Coordinator acting as the highest-ranking official representing the UN at the country level. The organization operates globally, focusing on sustainable development and collaboration with various stakeholders to implement the 2030 Agenda.

Job Overview:
The Communications and Advocacy Officer is tasked with providing substantial support to the UN Resident Coordinator and the UN Country Team in the design, implementation, and monitoring of a joint advocacy and communications strategy. This role is pivotal in promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Corporation Framework (UNSDCF) as the primary tool for planning and executing UN development activities in Eswatini. The officer will also address potential issues and risks related to communications and advocacy, suggesting corrective actions as necessary. The position requires maintaining relationships with various stakeholders, including UN agencies, government officials, civil society, and media, to enhance communication efforts and support the overall mission of the UN in the country.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Create and moderate engaging content for social media and digital platforms to advance communications priorities.
  • Implement communications strategies to raise awareness and drive engagement with target audiences.
  • Prepare talking points and key messages for media interviews to shape public perceptions of UN work.
  • Draft compelling narratives and messaging on UN activities across various channels.
  • Conduct media mapping and foster relationships with media outlets, editors, and influencers.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating press conferences and media events.
  • Develop media lines for crisis situations and sensitive issues.
  • Draft and produce communications products such as press releases and reports.

  • Deliver outreach and advocacy strategies to engage target audiences. 1
  • Create content for UN and community radio channels and podcasts. 1
  • Update policy and training related to strategic communications. 1
  • Monitor and analyze communications strategies for effectiveness. 1
  • Collect and analyze data to identify trends for decision-making. 1
  • Document requirements for data analysis. 1
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, critical thinking skills, and the ability to develop creative content. Knowledge of digital design and the ability to analyze data for decision-making are essential. Candidates should show pride in their work, be efficient in meeting commitments, and demonstrate a commitment to gender perspectives in all areas of work. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are crucial, as is the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, valuing others' ideas and expertise.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, digital communications, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. Completion of programs in data analytics or related fields is advantageous.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in developing and implementing communications strategies is required. Experience in data analytics is desirable, as is knowledge of risks to information integrity in fragile or crisis environments. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in communicating complex matters to diverse audiences.

Languages:
Fluency in English and SiSwati (or Swazi) is required for this position. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas: reading, writing, speaking, and understanding.

Additional Notes:
This is a fixed-term limited position, initially for one year, with the possibility of extension subject to funding and mandate availability. The position is open to nationals of Eswatini only, and candidates residing outside the country may be considered at their own expense.
