Job Overview: The Development Worker position is part of a project aimed at strengthening the rights-based approach in civil society organizations, particularly focusing on the human rights of vulnerable groups. This role involves advising and supporting the National Union of Disability Organizations in Rwanda (NUDOR) to enhance their organizational structures and processes. The Development Worker will work to empower civil society organizations with the necessary resources to implement a human rights-based approach effectively. Additionally, the position entails improving the legal and political frameworks that protect human rights and support the work of civil society organizations. The successful candidate will engage in capacity building, strategic planning, and advocacy efforts, ensuring that NUDOR can effectively represent and support its member organizations.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Development Worker will have a range of responsibilities, including advising NUDOR's management on strengthening organizational structures, developing staff capacities in strategic and operational planning, and enhancing advocacy efforts with a focus on regional and international human rights cooperation. The role also involves advising on methods that support self-representation among member organizations, developing quality assurance mechanisms for disability inclusion publications, and creating a monitoring and evaluation system to capture best practices in program implementation. Furthermore, the Development Worker will provide guidance to other project partners on disability rights and the implementation of disability inclusion strategies.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in law, human rights, social work, or a related field. Several years of relevant work experience are required, particularly in development cooperation, human rights, or disability rights. Experience in advising on special needs education and disability rights is essential, along with work experience in the Global South, particularly in engaging with civil society and government officials. Strong teamwork, networking, facilitation, and intercultural competence skills are necessary, as well as a willingness to travel regularly within the country of assignment.
Educational Background: A university degree in a relevant field such as law, human rights, social work, or a similar discipline is mandatory for this position. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of human rights and disability rights, as well as for effectively advising organizations on these issues.
Experience: Candidates should have several years of professional experience, ideally with a focus on development cooperation, human rights, or disability rights. Experience in advising organizations, particularly in the context of special needs education and disability rights, is highly valued. Familiarity with the operational environment in the Global South, especially in relation to civil society engagement, is also important.
Languages: Business fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if they are relevant to the local context or the communities served by NUDOR.
