Job Overview:
The Nurse – Migration Health position is crucial for the effective functioning of the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Lagos, Abuja, and Benin. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Chief Migration Health Officer and the Senior Nurse, providing essential nursing services to migrants and refugees. The role involves conducting medical examinations, supporting TB management, and ensuring compliance with health assessment protocols. The nurse will also be responsible for maintaining accurate records, assisting with medical emergencies, and providing general support to the health assessment team. This position requires a proactive approach to patient care and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of health service delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with daily nursing activities in the Migration Health Assessment Clinic, including conducting medical examinations such as checking vital signs, collecting blood, urine, or sputum samples, and supporting TB management through Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS).
  • Provide information and support to migrants regarding health assessments, treatments, and referrals.
  • Ensure proper identification and follow-up of applicants by maintaining comprehensive records and verifying IDs throughout the health assessment process.
  • Adhere to Health Assessment Programmes’ checklists and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintaining universal precautions.
  • Assist in managing medical emergencies and chronic cases, coordinating specialist consultations as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of applicants and upload medical reports to required databases.
  • Perform national medical escort duties to ensure continuity of care for migrants.
  • Assist with checking medical invoices and preparing lists of medical supplies for ordering.
  • Collaborate with administrative and finance teams to confirm and receive ordered supplies. 1
  • Undertake any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid nursing license to practice in Nigeria and demonstrate a proven clinical specialization in emergency care. Effective writing and communication skills are essential, along with a good understanding of nursing principles, techniques, and procedures. Knowledge of migration health issues and experience in public health or communicable diseases will be advantageous. Computer literacy, particularly in MS Office applications, is required.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is a Certificate or High School diploma accompanied by three years of relevant work experience. Alternatively, candidates may hold an Intermediate degree in Nursing with at least three years of relevant experience. Accreditation from recognized universities listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database is necessary.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of three years of relevant work experience in nursing, with a focus on areas such as Tuberculosis management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, and laboratory testing. Experience in public health settings is highly desirable, as is familiarity with the operational aspects of health assessments for migrants and refugees.

Languages:
Fluency in English and a local language is mandatory, both oral and written. Proficiency in additional languages such as French or Spanish is considered an asset and will be evaluated during the selection process.
