Job Overview:
The Associate Environmental Affairs Officer will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the Espoo Convention and its Protocol on Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). This position involves a variety of tasks aimed at enhancing sustainable development initiatives within the UNECE framework. The incumbent will be responsible for preparing official documents for the Working Group, drafting reports, and assisting in the organization of expert meetings and seminars. The role requires a strong understanding of environmental policies and the ability to communicate complex information effectively to non-specialists. The officer will also engage in research and data analysis to support decision-making processes related to sustainable development, ensuring that the UNECE's objectives are met efficiently and effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Associate Environmental Affairs Officer include supporting the preparations for the Working Group and Implementation Committee sessions, drafting documentation, and assisting elected officers in developing recommendations. The officer will handle correspondence, prepare summaries, and provide legal advice as needed. Additionally, the role involves maintaining databases, preparing briefing notes, and drafting analytical studies on sustainable development issues. The officer will also assist in organizing expert group meetings and seminars, compile information for capacity development projects, and monitor the implementation of these projects. Other responsibilities include performing administrative tasks related to substantive activities and participating in training activities to enhance professional skills.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of environmental impact assessment (EIA) and strategic environmental assessment (SEA). They should demonstrate the ability to conduct research, analyze data, and write reports on relevant topics. The position requires professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to work under pressure while meeting deadlines. The officer should also be capable of incorporating gender perspectives into their work and ensuring equal participation in all areas. Planning and organizational skills are essential, as well as the ability to adapt to changing priorities and allocate resources effectively.

Educational Background:
A first-level university degree in sustainable development, international law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">environmental law and policy, natural resources management, social sciences, or a related field is required. Additionally, successful completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is considered an advantage, as it enhances the candidate's ability to analyze and interpret data effectively.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in project or program management, policy-oriented work in climate change, human rights, and environmental impact assessment is required. Experience in data analytics or a related area is desirable, with at least one year of relevant experience preferred. This experience should demonstrate the candidate's ability to manage projects effectively and contribute to policy development in the field of environmental affairs.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is desirable, as it is also a working language within the organization. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, enhancing communication capabilities within the diverse environment of the United Nations.
