The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is an operational arm of the United Nations, established to support the successful implementation of peacebuilding, humanitarian, and development projects globally. With a workforce of over 6,000 personnel across 80 countries, UNOPS provides sustainable project management, procurement, and infrastructure services to various governments, donors, and UN organizations. The organization is involved in around 1,000 projects at any given time, contributing significantly to results in challenging environments. The South East Asia and Pacific Multi-Country Office (EAPMCO), established in January 2023, oversees UNOPS projects in 24 countries, focusing on areas such as energy transition, digital transformations, and climate change.
Job Overview:
The Senior Project Manager will play a crucial role in coordinating and providing technical expertise for UNOPS projects in Papua New Guinea. This position involves supervising a diverse team, ensuring high-quality project delivery, and maintaining effective communication with stakeholders. The Senior Project Manager will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with UNOPS guidelines and funders' agreements, and providing programmatic advice and resource management. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to capacity building within the team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Project Manager's duties include providing technical advisory services, managing program implementation, overseeing project reporting, and maintaining stakeholder relationships. Specific responsibilities involve supporting business development in infrastructure sectors, leading project planning and resource allocation, ensuring compliance with quality control standards, and managing project risks. The Senior Project Manager will also be responsible for preparing design briefs, coordinating with government stakeholders, and ensuring effective communication with funders. Additionally, the role includes supervising the performance of service providers, implementing health and safety measures, and attending project sites to monitor progress.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related field. A first university degree with additional relevant experience may be considered. Professional engineering certification is an asset. The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in managing projects within the renewable energy sector, with a proven track record in designing and supervising solar energy projects. Skills in generating high-quality technical reports and experience in developing/post-conflict countries are also desirable.
Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s Degree or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first university degree (Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent) with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Professional engineering certification is considered an asset for this position.
Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least seven years of relevant experience managing projects in the renewable energy sector or a related field. Experience in designing and supervising solar energy projects is particularly valuable, along with a background in other renewable energy projects such as hydropower, wind, or geothermal. Familiarity with Google Suite applications and web-based management systems is also desirable, as is relevant experience in developing or post-conflict countries.
Languages:
Full working knowledge of the English language is required for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, but English is mandatory for effective communication within the role.
Additional Notes:
The contract type for this position is an International Individual Contract Agreement (IICA), classified at the ICS 11/IICA 3 level. The contract duration is ongoing and subject to organizational requirements, availability of funds, and satisfactory performance. Port Moresby is designated as a family duty station, and candidates should be aware that if the selected candidate is a national of the duty station, a Local Individual Contractor Agreement (LICA) will be issued.
