The service member will work closely with the Oglala Lakota Division of Behavioral Health in Whiteclay, NE, starting from May 19, 202
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the HeartCorps Service Member include serving full-time, typically Monday to Friday, for a total of 41.25 hours per week, with some flexibility for evening or weekend hours as needed. Key responsibilities include delivering health education on topics such as cardiovascular disease, nutrition, and chronic disease management. The service member will assist in public health surveys, which involves recruiting participants, administering surveys, tracking data, and generating reports. Additionally, the service member will plan and conduct local health skill-building workshops, health fairs, and community conversations to raise awareness about health issues. They will support community members in blood pressure self-monitoring and host Hands-Only CPR demonstrations. Engaging with local organizations to identify and develop resources for chronic disease interventions and overall health services is also a critical part of the role. Participation in AmeriCorps pre-service orientation and ongoing member development meetings is required.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the HeartCorps Service Member position must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents, at least 18 years old, and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Reliable transportation to and from the host site and community activities is essential, along with a valid driver's license and minimum automobile liability insurance. Strong written and oral communication skills are necessary, as well as a customer-focused and solution-oriented mindset. Candidates should be good listeners, non-judgmental, open-minded, and resourceful. Additionally, candidates must meet the National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria, which includes a nationwide check of the National Sex Offender Public website, state criminal history record check, and a fingerprint-based check of the FBI criminal history record database. While experience as a health aide or coursework in public health, health communications, health promotion, or health sciences is helpful, it is not a strict requirement.
