Job Overview:
The HeartCorps Service Member position is a full-time service role that offers individuals the chance to gain hands-on experience in public health while contributing to the well-being of their communities. Starting on May 19, 2025, the service member will work with Thrive Allen County in Iola, Kansas, focusing on health education and support related to heart health. The role involves engaging with community members to provide resources and education on cardiovascular health, chronic diseases, and healthy living. The service member will also assist in conducting public health surveys and organizing community health events, thereby playing a crucial role in enhancing health awareness and access to care in rural areas.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The HeartCorps Service Member will be responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at promoting health education and support within the community. These include: serving full-time Monday through Friday, typically 41.25 hours per week, with some flexibility for evening or weekend hours; delivering health education and assisting community members in navigating healthcare resources; conducting public health surveys, including participant recruitment and data tracking; planning and executing local health workshops, fairs, and community discussions; supporting patients in Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring initiatives; hosting Hands-Only CPR demonstrations; collaborating with local organizations to enhance resources for chronic disease interventions; and actively participating in AmeriCorps orientation and training sessions.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the HeartCorps Service Member position must meet several qualifications. They must be a United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident, at least 18 years old, and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Reliable transportation to the host site and community activities is essential, along with a valid driver's license and minimum required automobile liability insurance. Strong communication skills, both written and oral, are necessary, as is a customer-focused and solution-oriented mindset. Candidates must also pass the National Service Criminal History Check, which includes checks against the National Sex Offender Public website, state criminal history records, and a fingerprint-based FBI check. While experience as a health aide or coursework in public health is beneficial, it is not mandatory.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for the HeartCorps Service Member position includes a high school diploma or equivalent. While not mandatory, candidates with coursework in public health, health communications, health promotion, or health sciences may have an advantage in the selection process.
