Job Overview:
The HeartCorps Service Member position is a full-time service role that begins on May 19, 2025, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center in Ashtabula, OH. This role is designed for individuals who are passionate about public health and community service. The service member will engage in various activities aimed at improving health outcomes in the community, particularly focusing on heart health and chronic disease management. The position provides an excellent opportunity for individuals to gain hands-on experience in public health while contributing to the well-being of their community. The service member will work closely with local organizations and community members to deliver health education, support chronic disease interventions, and promote overall health and wellness.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The HeartCorps Service Member will be responsible for a range of duties including: serving full-time typically from Monday to Friday for 41.25 hours per week, with some flexibility for evening or weekend hours as needed. The member will deliver health education and assist patients and community members in navigating resources related to heart health, including topics such as cardiovascular disease, smoking cessation, nutrition, and chronic diseases like diabetes. Responsibilities also include conducting public health surveys, planning and executing local health workshops, health fairs, and community conversations to raise awareness about health issues. The service member will support community members in blood pressure self-monitoring and host Hands-Only CPR demonstrations. Additionally, the member will engage with local organizations to identify and develop resources that support families in accessing health services and will actively participate in AmeriCorps orientation and training sessions.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the HeartCorps Service Member position must be United States citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents, at least 18 years old, and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. They must have reliable transportation to and from the host site and community activities, maintain a valid driver's license, and meet minimum automobile liability insurance requirements. Strong communication skills, both written and oral, are essential, along with a customer-focused and solution-oriented mindset. Candidates must also pass the National Service Criminal History Check, which includes a nationwide check of the National Sex Offender Public website, state criminal history checks, and a fingerprint-based FBI criminal history check. While experience as a health aide or coursework in public health, health communications, health promotion, or health sciences is beneficial, it is not mandatory.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma or equivalent. While further education in public health or related fields is advantageous, it is not a strict requirement for applicants. The emphasis is on the candidate's ability to communicate effectively and engage with the community rather than formal educational credentials.
Experience:
While prior experience in health-related fields is helpful, it is not a strict requirement for the HeartCorps Service Member position. Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to learn and engage with the community.
