Job Overview:
The HeartCorps Service Member position is a full-time role that offers an opportunity to engage directly with the community to promote heart health and address health disparities. Service members will work closely with the Porter County Health Department in Valparaiso, IN, starting May 19, 202
  • The role involves delivering health education, assisting community members in navigating health resources, and conducting public health surveys. Members will also plan and facilitate workshops and health fairs, support chronic disease management, and engage with local organizations to enhance community health resources. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about public health and community service, providing a platform to make a significant impact on health equity.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the HeartCorps Service Member include serving full-time, typically Monday to Friday, for 41.25 hours per week, with potential evening or weekend hours. Responsibilities include delivering health education on topics such as cardiovascular disease, nutrition, and chronic diseases; assisting with public health surveys by recruiting participants and tracking data; planning and conducting health skill-building workshops and community events; supporting patients in blood pressure self-monitoring; hosting CPR demonstrations; and collaborating with local organizations to develop resources for chronic disease interventions. Members are also expected to participate in orientation and training sessions to enhance their skills and effectiveness in the role.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the HeartCorps Service Member position must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents, at least 18 years old, and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. They must have reliable transportation to the host site and community activities, maintain a valid driver's license, and meet minimum automobile liability insurance requirements. Strong communication skills, a customer-focused approach, and the ability to listen and be resourceful are essential. Candidates must also pass a National Service Criminal History Check, which includes checks against the National Sex Offender Public website, state criminal history records, and a fingerprint-based FBI check. While experience as a health aide or coursework in public health is beneficial, it is not mandatory.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma or equivalent. While not mandatory, coursework in public health, health communications, health promotion, or health sciences is considered helpful and may enhance a candidate's suitability for the role.

Experience:
The position does not require extensive prior experience, but having experience as a health aide or relevant coursework in public health or related fields is advantageous. The focus is on candidates who are eager to learn and engage in community service, rather than those with extensive professional backgrounds.

Languages:
