The organization operates in numerous countries and employs thousands of individuals dedicated to public health and wellness. The HeartCorps program specifically seeks to empower communities by providing resources and support to address health disparities, particularly in underserved areas.
Job Overview:
The HeartCorps Service Member position is a full-time service role that offers individuals the chance to gain hands-on experience in public health while contributing to the well-being of their community. Starting on May 19, 2025, the service member will be stationed at the Hammond Community Library in Hammond, WI. The role involves delivering health education, supporting community members in navigating health resources, and conducting public health surveys. The service member will also plan and execute health workshops and events aimed at raising awareness about heart health and chronic disease management. This position is ideal for those looking to make a tangible impact in their community while developing their professional skills in public health.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The HeartCorps Service Member will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: serving full-time Monday through Friday (41.25 hours per week), with some evening or weekend hours as needed; delivering health education and support to patients and community members on topics related to heart health, including cardiovascular disease, smoking cessation, nutrition, and chronic diseases like diabetes; assisting with public health surveys by recruiting participants, administering surveys in person or via phone, tracking data, and generating reports; planning and conducting local health skill-building workshops, health fairs, town halls, or community conversations to raise awareness and help community members manage their health; supporting patients and community members in initiating and conducting Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring; hosting Hands-Only CPR demonstrations for community members; engaging local organizations to identify and develop resources that support families in accessing chronic disease interventions and overall health services; and actively participating in AmeriCorps pre-service orientation, HeartCorps member development meetings, and assigned trainings.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the HeartCorps Service Member position must meet several qualifications, including being a United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien, at least 18 years of age, and possessing a high school diploma or equivalent. Additionally, candidates must have reliable transportation to and from the host site and community activities, maintain a valid driver's license, and have the minimum automobile liability insurance coverage as required by law. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, as well as a customer and solution-focused mindset. Candidates should be good listeners, non-judgmental, open-minded, and resourceful. Furthermore, candidates must satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria, which includes a nationwide check of the National Sex Offender Public website, state criminal history record check, and a fingerprint-based check of the FBI criminal history record database. While experience as a health aide or coursework in public health, health communications, health promotion, or health sciences is helpful, it is not required.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for the HeartCorps Service Member position includes a high school diploma or equivalent. While further education in public health, health communications, health promotion, or health sciences is beneficial, it is not a strict requirement for applicants. The emphasis is on the candidate's ability to engage with the community and deliver health education effectively, rather than on formal educational credentials alone.
Experience:
While specific experience in public health is not mandatory, having prior experience as a health aide or relevant coursework in public health or related fields is considered advantageous. The position is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and grow within the public health sector, making it suitable for those who may be entering the field for the first time or looking to expand their practical experience.
Languages:
The position does not specify mandatory languages; however, proficiency in English is essential for effective communication with community members and stakeholders. Additional language skills may be beneficial, particularly in communities with diverse populations, as they can enhance the service member's ability to connect with and support a broader range of individuals.
Additional Notes:
The HeartCorps Service Member position is a full-time role with a bi-weekly living stipend of $1108.70, which is taxable. Service members will also receive healthcare benefits and may be eligible for a childcare subsidy. Upon successful completion of the service term, members will receive an educational award, which can be used for further education or student loans. This position offers personal and professional development opportunities, as well as direct access to job opportunities following the completion of the program.
