Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) was established in December 1999 and serves as the focal point within the United Nations system for coordinating efforts to reduce disaster risks. With a mission to guide, monitor, analyze, and report on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, UNDRR works with UN Member States and various partners, including civil society, the private sector, and the scientific community. The organization has over 150 staff members based in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, as well as in regional offices across the globe, emphasizing its commitment to disaster risk reduction in both developed and developing countries.

Job Overview:
The Digital Technologies and AI Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting UNDRR by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies into disaster risk reduction (DRR) programming. This position aims to enhance risk modeling, scenario planning, and decision-making processes through the application of advanced technologies such as Earth Observation, digital twins, and predictive analytics. The specialist will also focus on improving early warning systems by leveraging AI to strengthen risk knowledge production, automation, and monitoring. Additionally, the role involves advising on the alignment of UNDRR's AI initiatives with UN 2.0, contributing to the UN Task Force on Digital Technologies, and providing policy recommendations for AI adoption in DRR strategies. The position is home-based and requires collaboration with various UNDRR branches and regional offices to ensure effective integration of AI into DRR systems and programming.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for conducting a comprehensive review of UNDRR's disaster risk management tools and processes to identify opportunities for integrating AI and other digital technologies. This includes evaluating global best practices in AI and digital technologies within the context of DRR and recommending solutions for adoption. The specialist will develop proposals for AI integration into early warning systems, provide technical guidance on AI-driven automation in disaster tracking systems, and strengthen data analytics and visualization capabilities for the Sendai Framework Monitor (SFM). Furthermore, the consultant will design AI-driven risk profiles to support country-level disaster risk assessments, develop training materials on AI for UNDRR staff and partners, and facilitate workshops and consultations to raise awareness of AI applications in DRR. The role also involves drafting policy recommendations and best practices for the ethical and responsible use of AI in disaster risk reduction.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s or PhD) in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A minimum of seven years of experience in AI, data science, and digital technologies is required, preferably in development, humanitarian action, resilience-building, DRR, or climate adaptation. Proven experience in AI-driven predictive modeling, machine learning applications, and data integration is essential. Desirable qualifications include experience in risk modeling, impact forecasting, geospatial analytics, real-time data processing, cloud computing platforms, AI frameworks (such as TensorFlow and PyTorch), and geospatial analysis tools. Experience in policy advisory roles within UN agencies, governments, or international organizations is also desirable.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (master’s or PhD) in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Data Science, or Artificial Intelligence is required for this position. Candidates with a first-level university degree and additional qualifying experience may also be considered. This educational background is essential to ensure that the specialist has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively integrate AI and digital technologies into disaster risk reduction strategies.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in AI, data science, and digital technologies, particularly in contexts related to development, humanitarian action, resilience-building, disaster risk reduction, or climate adaptation. Candidates should have a proven track record in AI-driven predictive modeling and machine learning applications, as well as experience in data integration. Additional desirable experience includes risk modeling, impact forecasting, and familiarity with geospatial analytics and real-time data processing.
