Job Overview: The position of National Mentor Consultant is crucial for enhancing the quality of nursing and obstetric interventions in Guinea-Bissau. The role involves continuous evaluation of health service providers, focusing on improving the quality of reproductive, maternal, neonatal, and child health services. The mentor will work closely with local health teams to strengthen their skills, ensure proper data collection, and develop strategic reports to monitor progress. The overarching goal is to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality through effective mentorship and capacity building in health facilities across the targeted regions of Quínara, Gabú, and Bafatá.
Duties and Responsibilities: The National Mentor Consultants will be responsible for observing health providers, analyzing health facility environments, identifying gaps in skills and resources, and developing plans to address these gaps. They will provide direct support and corrections to health providers, assist in managing obstetric and neonatal emergencies, and supervise the handling of complications. Regular evaluations of the progress of mentored providers will be conducted, and feedback will be documented. The mentors will also organize peer learning sessions and strengthen the capacities of local managers to ensure sustainability after the mentorship mission ends. Monthly, quarterly, and annual reports will be developed to track the progress and outcomes of the mentorship activities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a degree in health sciences with at least 10 years of experience in reproductive, maternal, neonatal, and child health (SRMNIA). They should have proven field experience in Guinea-Bissau, a deep understanding of the local health context, and experience in health program evaluation and planning. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for effective mentorship and collaboration with health teams and stakeholders. Proficiency in data collection and analysis is also required.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in health sciences is mandatory for this position. Additional certifications in obstetrics or related fields will be advantageous. Candidates should also have a solid understanding of international health standards and practices, particularly in reproductive health and family planning.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in health services, specifically in reproductive health and maternal care. Experience in mentoring or training health professionals is highly desirable, as is familiarity with the health care system in Guinea-Bissau.
Languages: Fluency in Portuguese or Creole is mandatory. Knowledge of French or English is considered an asset, as it may facilitate communication with international stakeholders and enhance the effectiveness of mentorship activities.
Additional Notes: The mentorship contract will last for 9 months, starting from the date of signing. The position requires on-site presence in health facilities across the three targeted regions of Quínara, Gabú, and Bafatá. The consultants will receive logistical support for travel and access to necessary resources and equipment to perform their duties effectively. All reports and materials produced during this consultancy will be the exclusive property of the DSSR and UNFPA, and cannot be used or distributed without prior written consent.
