The position of Interpreter/Translator for Unaccompanied Minors (UMC) is crucial in facilitating effective communication between IOM staff and the UMC residing in accommodation centers. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring that UMC receive the necessary support and services by providing interpretation and translation services. This includes assisting with communication in both spoken and written forms, helping UMC navigate their new environment, and acting as a cultural mediator during their adjustment period. The role requires a compassionate and culturally sensitive individual who can bridge language barriers and provide essential information to both the UMC and IOM staff. Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a high school degree or certificate as a minimum requirement. A Bachelor’s degree in Interpretation/Translation, Social Science, Humanities, or a related field is highly desirable and will be considered an advantage. Candidates are encouraged to have their qualifications from accredited universities, as listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database, to ensure recognition and relevance in the context of the role.
Experience:
Candidates should possess previous experience in a similar role, which may include work as an interpreter or translator, particularly in contexts involving migrants or refugees. Certification or training in interpretation or translation is preferred. Experience in providing direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees is highly valued, as is familiarity with the challenges faced by these populations. Additionally, experience working in a multi-cultural environment is advantageous, as it demonstrates the ability to navigate diverse cultural contexts effectively.
Languages:
The mandatory languages for this position include a working knowledge of English or Greek, which is required for effective communication within the organization. Fluency in Farsi/Dari, both written and oral, is also required, as it is essential for communicating with the UMC. IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages may be evaluated during the selection process, which could include written and/or oral assessments to ensure candidates meet the necessary language requirements.
Additional Notes:
This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Greece will be eligible for consideration. The appointment will be contingent upon certification of medical fitness for the role, as well as verification of residency, visa, and any necessary authorizations from the relevant government authorities. - Performing any other duties as assigned by the Project Coordinator or Shelter Coordinator, contributing to the overall success of the project.
Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the position include:
- A high school degree/certificate is mandatory.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Interpretation/Translation, Social Science, Humanities, or a relevant discipline is considered an advantage.
- Previous experience in a similar role is preferred, particularly in providing direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees.
- Familiarity with working in a multi-cultural environment is an advantage.
- Strong computer literacy in standard software applications (e.g., MS Office) is required.
- A valid driver’s license with at least five years of driving experience is considered an advantage.
