Job Overview:
The Technical Officer on Community Co-Management will play a crucial role in supporting local communities in the co-management of mangroves and Multiple Use Management Areas (MUMAs) in Suriname. This position is vital for promoting community participation in the management of mangrove forests, which are essential for coastal protection and climate change adaptation. The officer will work closely with local communities, government experts, and stakeholders to develop and implement capacity development plans, training programs, and governance frameworks that enhance community engagement in sustainable mangrove management. The role requires a proactive approach to strengthen decision-making processes and facilitate local dialogues on sustainable use of mangroves, ensuring that gender-responsive practices are integrated into all activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Technical Officer will be responsible for a variety of key functions, including promoting community participation in mangrove management, providing technical support for governance of mangrove ecosystems, developing capacity development plans, delivering training to stakeholders, coordinating project activities, and mainstreaming gender in community co-management efforts. The officer will also support local decision-making processes, facilitate local dialogues, assess and implement nature-based solutions, contribute to knowledge management, strengthen partnerships with stakeholders, and support project management and monitoring. This includes preparing reports, maintaining relationships with local communities and government bodies, and ensuring that project outputs are achieved in line with the project document.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in environmental management, socio-economic studies, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) combined with two years of relevant experience will be considered. Applicants with a master's degree are not required to have professional work experience, while those with a bachelor's degree must have at least two years of relevant professional experience in community engagement and participation, particularly in mangrove management projects. Proven experience in supporting projects with donor organizations, governmental institutions, NGOs, or the private sector is highly desirable.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in environmental management, socio-economic studies, or a related field. A first-level university degree in the same areas, combined with additional relevant experience, will also be considered. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of community engagement and sustainable resource management in the context of mangrove ecosystems.

Experience:
The level of experience required for this position varies based on educational qualifications. Applicants with a master's degree are not required to have prior professional experience, while those with a bachelor's degree must have a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience. Experience in community engagement, particularly in projects related to mangrove management, is considered an asset. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively with project stakeholders and the UNDP country office team.

Languages:
Fluency in Dutch is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication in Suriname. A working knowledge of English is considered an asset, as it may facilitate communication with international stakeholders and enhance collaboration on project activities.
