Job Overview: The Senior Structural Engineer (Retainer) position is part of the UNOPS Corporate Retainer Pool, primarily serving the Design Review team within the Infrastructure and Project Management Group (IPMG). This role is not a full-time position; instead, it involves providing engineering services on an ad-hoc basis, responding to requests from UNOPS project teams or country offices. The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for technical reviews, design guidance, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and UNOPS policies. The position requires flexibility, as assignments may vary in scope, duration, and location, with most work being home-based. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, functionality, and quality of UNOPS infrastructure projects, applying professional judgment and expertise to meet technical objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct technical reviews of design documentation, including structural design drawings, technical specifications, and Bills of Quantities (BOQs), ensuring compliance with minimum codes and standards.
Provide support in the development of designs, offering guidance to achieve technical objectives.
Apply professional judgment to ensure the safety and functionality of infrastructure, considering the operational context of UNOPS.
Maintain independence and integrity in providing technical opinions, free from conflicts of interest.
Collaborate with project teams to deliver high-quality engineering services, adapting to varying requests and timelines.
Participate in induction sessions to familiarize with UNOPS tools and contract modalities.
Engage in continuous professional development and stay updated on industry standards and practices.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, preferably with a specialization in Structural Engineering. Alternatively, a Bachelor's Degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a Master’s Degree, totaling nine years of experience. The role requires at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in civil engineering, with a preference for candidates who have experience in structural engineering and the rehabilitation and construction of buildings or transport infrastructures. Knowledge of sustainable practices and green technologies in structural engineering is highly desirable, along with familiarity with seismic-resistant design principles.
Educational Background: A Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a similar field is required, with a preference for candidates who have specialized in Structural Engineering from an accredited university. A Bachelor's Degree may be accepted if accompanied by two additional years of relevant experience, totaling nine years of experience in the field.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in civil engineering, with a strong preference for candidates who have experience in structural engineering, rehabilitation, and construction of new buildings or transport infrastructures such as bridges and tunnels. Desired experience includes structural modeling, assessment of blast-damaged structures, and knowledge of sustainable and resilient approaches to structural engineering.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory. Additionally, fluency in Ukrainian and/or Russian is required. Proficiency in either Spanish or French is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate in diverse environments.
Additional Notes: This position is classified as an Individual Contractor Agreement (ICA) under the retainer contract modality, with a contract level of IICA

The retainer contract specifies a unit price for services rendered, with payment made upon completion of assignments or reaching agreed milestones.
