Job Overview:
The Contaminated Sites Management Consultant will play a crucial role in supporting the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in its efforts to address soil pollution and contaminated site management in the Western Balkans. This position involves working closely with the UNEP project team and the Head of the UNEP Vienna-SCC Office to ensure the successful implementation of projects aimed at reducing pollution and enhancing environmental protection practices. The consultant will be responsible for coordinating activities, facilitating knowledge exchange among experts, and strengthening networks related to contaminated site management. Additionally, the consultant will design and implement capacity-building initiatives to empower local stakeholders in addressing soil pollution and its impacts on health and ecosystems. The ultimate goal is to develop an expert network at national, regional, and potentially international levels, ensuring the sustainability of project results and contributing to the broader objectives of the UNEP.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: actively participating in Technical Working Group (TWG) meetings and providing technical expertise on contaminated site management; collaborating with thematic expert groups to facilitate knowledge exchange and promote synergies between regional initiatives and global frameworks; strengthening collaboration with established networks for data sharing and knowledge dissemination; developing progress reports and recommendations based on expert group discussions; conducting capacity needs assessments to identify gaps in knowledge and resources; designing tailored training programs focused on contaminated site management; identifying and selecting pilot sites for practical demonstration activities; and providing hands-on technical support through field activities. The consultant will also be responsible for ensuring that all tasks and outputs align with the project’s objectives and contribute to the overall success of the initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, or related fields. A minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience is required, with at least 5 years specifically in the remediation of contaminated sites being an asset. The consultant should demonstrate strong coordination and communication skills, particularly in managing operational activities with international partners and stakeholders. Previous experience in Southeast Europe is considered advantageous. Candidates should also exhibit outstanding written and oral communication skills, proficiency in MS Office and various media applications, excellent time-management skills, and a positive attitude towards project goals. Flexibility in responding to additional requirements and accountability for task completion are essential.

Educational Background:
The position requires an advanced university degree, specifically a Master’s degree or equivalent, in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, or other related fields. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of contaminated site management and soil pollution, as well as for developing effective strategies and solutions to address these challenges.

Experience:
The consultant must have a minimum of 7 years of work experience relevant to the assignment, with a strong emphasis on contaminated site management. At least 5 years of experience specifically in the remediation of contaminated sites is highly desirable. The candidate should have a proven track record of coordinating and managing communications with international partners and stakeholders, as well as experience in operational activities related to environmental projects. Familiarity with the specific challenges and contexts of Southeast Europe will be considered an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the UN. The ability to communicate effectively in both languages will enhance collaboration with diverse stakeholders and contribute to the success of the projects.
