Job Overview:
The Development Director, School Engagement position is a vital role within the American Heart Association, focusing on building partnerships with K-12 schools in southern and central Maine. This position requires a blend of remote work and in-person engagement, as the director will be responsible for cultivating relationships with schools, recruiting volunteers, and managing fundraising initiatives. The director will work closely with the Vice President and Senior Vice President of School Engagement to implement effective sales techniques aimed at acquiring new accounts and renewing existing ones. The role is essential for achieving revenue generation and program goals, making it a key contributor to the AHA's mission of promoting heart health and wellness in the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Development Director will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
  • Recruiting and cultivating school volunteers for K-12 partnerships with the AHA.
  • Developing and executing plans to meet revenue and volunteer recruitment goals, including securing sponsorships and donations.
  • Managing accounts and promoting the AHA's cause within existing and potential school accounts.
  • Implementing life-saving initiatives such as the Kids Heart Challenge programs.
  • Recruiting, training, and developing volunteers at various levels within the schools.
  • Establishing and maintaining strong customer service relations with school contacts.
  • Attending all required meetings and trainings.
  • Engaging in summer cultivation activities with school administrators.
  • Visiting 5-10 schools daily, which may involve lifting and moving large objects as needed. 1
  • Ensuring reliable transportation for daily travel within the assigned territory.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess a university or college degree or equivalent experience, with a preference for those with at least 3 years of relevant experience in fundraising, sales, or a similar field. Strong marketing, communication, and relationship-building skills are essential. The ability to analyze and forecast sales data, along with proficiency in written and oral communication, is required. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to recruit, train, and counsel volunteers effectively. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, including presentations and spreadsheets, is necessary. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have access to reliable transportation for local travel up to 75%.

Educational Background:
A university or college degree is preferred for this position, although equivalent experience may be considered. The educational background should ideally align with the responsibilities of fundraising, sales, or community engagement, equipping the candidate with the necessary skills to succeed in this role.

Experience:
