The ATscale Secretariat is hosted by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and is based in Geneva, Switzerland. ATscale operates with a focus on low- and middle-income countries, addressing the urgent need for assistive technology, particularly in the area of vision-related assistive technology, which affects over 1 billion people worldwide.
Job Overview: The Technical Advisor position is part of the ATscale Advisory Technical Group, which provides strategic and technical advice on assistive technology initiatives related to vision function. The role involves evaluating ATscale's strategic priorities, assisting in the development of technical documents and proposals, and providing expert insights on trends and opportunities in the vision-related assistive technology sector. The incumbent will engage with stakeholders, participate in capacity-building activities, and contribute to ATscale's Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning framework. The position is designed for individuals with a strong background in assistive technology and a commitment to improving access for underserved populations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide independent advice and feedback on ATscale’s strategic priorities and annual work plans.
Assist in identifying gaps and prioritizing areas for intervention in alignment with ATscale’s goals.
Support the design and improvement of technical documents and programs related to vision function.
Participate in the evaluation of proposals for their strategic value and technical soundness.
Provide expert insights on trends and risks in the vision-related assistive technology sector.
Identify potential collaborators to foster AT initiatives.
Lead capacity-building activities such as webinars and workshops.
Engage in virtual meetings with stakeholders to discuss initiatives and provide recommendations.
Offer individual consultations on assistive technology for vision. 1
Undertake other related duties as required, including potential travel for in-person meetings.
Required Qualifications:
Advanced degree (Masters or above) in relevant fields such as Ophthalmology, Optometry, public health, or biomedical science.
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field combined with 2 years of relevant work experience may be accepted.
Minimum of 7 years of experience in assistive technology, particularly in eye and vision care.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess an advanced degree (Masters or above) in fields such as Ophthalmology, Optometry, health or public health, rehabilitation, biomedical science, or statistics. A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, combined with additional work experience, may be considered equivalent to an advanced degree.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 7 years of combined experience in assistive technology, particularly in public health, non-communicable diseases, eye and vision care, or vision rehabilitation. Experience in low-resource settings and familiarity with disability rights and inclusion are also essential.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory. Working knowledge of other UN languages is considered an advantage.
Additional Notes: The position is offered as a retainer contract with no minimum number of working days expected. The contract duration is initially one year, renewable based on performance and funding availability. The incumbents will be compensated based on a daily wage for the days worked.
