Job Overview: The role of the driver is crucial for the effective implementation of project travel plans, ensuring the safe and timely transportation of staff, goods, and correspondences as scheduled and approved. The driver is entrusted with the organization’s valuable assets, including the lives of employees and the vehicles themselves. This position requires a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficiency while adhering to the organization's policies and procedures. The driver must ensure that all transportation activities are conducted in a manner that prioritizes the safety of passengers and the integrity of the vehicle, while also being responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the vehicle to prevent breakdowns and ensure comfort during travel. The driver will also be expected to comply with all relevant transport policies and contribute to the safeguarding of children and young people as well as promoting gender equality and inclusion in all aspects of their work.
Duties and Responsibilities: The driver’s duties and responsibilities are categorized into several key areas: Transportation (50%): Responsible for the safe, efficient, timely, and well-coordinated transportation of staff and designated individuals to various locations as instructed. This includes the transportation of goods to required points as directed, ensuring that Plan International assets are safeguarded in the vehicle at all times. The driver must maintain an updated vehicle logbook to track vehicle usage and provide timely execution of office errands to facilitate smooth project communications and logistics. The driver is expected to maintain the highest level of conduct on the road, driving with due care and consideration for other road users and pedestrians. Maintenance (30%): The driver must ensure that the vehicle is well-maintained and clean to avoid breakdowns and ensure passenger comfort. This includes ensuring that the vehicle is equipped with a valid first aid kit, working safety belts, a fire extinguisher, and valid local licenses and inspection certificates. The driver is responsible for refueling the vehicle using an approved fuel voucher or fuel card and keeping the vehicle log sheet updated. The vehicle must be safely parked at a designated location at the end of each working day, no later than 6 pm, and any incidents or accidents involving Plan International vehicles must be reported immediately to the supervisor. Compliance (10%): The driver must comply with transport and corporate policies to ensure efficiency and harmony with other departments and government regulations. This includes maintaining a valid driving license and producing it when required, as well as promoting and adhering to Plan International policies and procedures, including safeguarding children and young people and the Code of Conduct. Safeguarding Children and Young People and Gender Equality and Inclusion (5%): The driver must understand and implement responsibilities under the Safeguarding and GEI policies, ensuring that concerns are reported and managed according to appropriate procedures. The driver will lead the orientation of program staff to ensure they understand their role in upholding these policies and ensure that they are embedded in project design and implementation. Other Duties (5%): The driver may be assigned additional duties by the supervisor as needed.
Required Qualifications: The essential qualifications and experience required for this position include: an O’ level certificate, a minimum of 5 years of driving experience in a busy working environment, a valid driving license (Class B, C & E), basic mechanic skills (Grade 3), and a valid certificate of good conduct. Additionally, fluency in English and Kiswahili is required. Desirable qualifications include defensive driving training, which would enhance the driver's skills and safety awareness on the road.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes at least an O’ level certificate, which demonstrates a foundational level of education. This level of education is essential for understanding and following instructions, maintaining records, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of driving experience in a busy working environment. This experience is crucial for ensuring that the driver is familiar with the demands of transporting staff and goods safely and efficiently, as well as handling various driving conditions and challenges that may arise during the course of work.
Languages: The mandatory languages for this position include excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Kiswahili. Knowledge of one or more local languages is considered an added advantage, as it may facilitate better communication with local communities and stakeholders.
