Job Overview: The Electrical Engineering Technician - Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting Troop and Police Contributing Countries (T/PCCs) in deploying renewable energy solutions to peacekeeping missions. This position involves improving energy generation efficiency through proactive assessments and technical assistance. The incumbent will frequently travel to remote locations for site assessments and installation of monitoring equipment. The role is integral to the Environment Strategy for Peace Operations, which aims to transition peacekeeping missions towards renewable energy, particularly solar photovoltaic solutions, to reduce environmental impact and enhance operational efficiency.
Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will engage with T/PCC technical counterparts, articulating key findings and contributing to technical solutions. Responsibilities include compiling a portfolio of renewable energy projects, installing energy meters, developing engineering designs, monitoring project activities, and preparing reports. The role also involves establishing a training program on renewable energy systems and collaborating with member states to develop training materials. The Electrical Engineering Technician - Specialist will submit a final report documenting engagement with T/PCCs and the renewable energy projects developed during the mandate.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy, Environmental or relevant fields. A first-level university degree with additional relevant experience may be accepted. Project Management certification such as Prince2 is desirable. Candidates should have a minimum of five years of experience in electrical engineering and renewable energy projects, with at least one year of experience in energy infrastructure and technical support for renewable energy projects in UN field missions. Experience working with T/PCCs on renewable energy projects is also desirable.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Energy, Environmental or other relevant fields is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) with an additional two years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Project Management certification such as Prince2, or equivalent, is desirable.
Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in electrical engineering, renewable energy, and engineering design for renewable energy development projects is required. Candidates should have at least one year of experience in energy infrastructure and one year of experience providing technical support to renewable energy projects in UN field missions. Experience in managing a portfolio of energy projects and strong coordination skills are also desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of an additional UN language is considered an advantage.
Additional Notes: The contract type is an International Individual Contractor Agreement at the ICS10 / IICA-2 level. The contract duration is ongoing and open-ended, subject to organizational requirements, availability of funds, and satisfactory performance.
