The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) was established by the General Assembly in 1996 and serves as the UN headquarters in Africa. It is headed by a Director-General at the Under-Secretary-General level and acts as the representative office of the Secretary-General in Nairobi. UNON performs representation and liaison functions with permanent missions, the host country, and other governments, as well as intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations in Nairobi. It also collaborates with other organizations of the United Nations system in Kenya, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

Job Overview:
The Public Information Assistant position is situated within the Visitors Service, reporting to the United Nations Office at Nairobi Information Service (UNIS). This role is part of the Campaigns and Country Operations Division (CCOD) of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The primary function of UNIS Nairobi is to support the work of the United Nations through external communications and advocacy efforts, which aim to enhance public understanding of the UN’s goals, activities, and impact. The assistant will be involved in various tasks that include producing multilingual live and on-demand streaming coverage of UN meetings and events, conducting content research, maintaining multilingual content on UN Web TV, managing metadata, integrating social media, and assisting with archive and database management. The role requires a proactive approach to ensure effective communication and representation of the UN's mission and activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Public Information Assistant include:
  • Production Assistance: Provide specialized assistance in the production of multilingual live and on-demand streaming coverage on UN Web TV of United Nations meetings and events.
  • Content Research: Research a broad scope of information sources, compile, and present information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services for external audiences.
  • Multilingual Content Maintenance: Assist with the maintenance of multilingual content on UN Web TV, including writing and/or translating appropriate language metadata and captioning of UN Secretary-General’s video messages.
  • Metadata Management: Enter language metadata and categorization into the UN Web TV video platform, monitor live coverage, and edit video clips.
  • Social Media Integration: Assist with the live streaming coverage and publishing of curated multilingual content to social media platforms.
  • Archive Management: Assist in the management of the film/video archives and the proper safekeeping/preservation of historical audio/visual materials.
  • Database Management: Manage updates and further develop internal databases, update websites, and generate a variety of standard and non-standard reports.
  • Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
