Job Details
Job Posting Organization: UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) is the lead UN agency focused on delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled. Established in 1969, UNFPA operates in over 150 countries and has a mission to promote reproductive health and rights, gender equality, and the empowerment of women and girls. The organization is committed to achieving three transformative results by 2030: ending preventable maternal deaths, ending unmet need for family planning, and ending gender-based violence and harmful practices. UNFPA's strategic plan for 2022-2025 emphasizes the importance of addressing the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on women's and girls' access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, while also focusing on building forward better and recovering lost gains. UNFPA seeks principled and ethical staff who embody international norms and standards, and who are committed to delivering high-impact results in their work.
Job Overview: The position of International Consultant involves developing and facilitating workshops aimed at strengthening the capacities of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in engaging men to promote gender equality and change social norms related to gender-based violence (GBV). The consultant will work closely with a team leader to coordinate and facilitate a three-day regional workshop addressing discriminatory gender social norms in Central Asian countries. The workshops are part of the UK ISF project, which adopts a holistic, gender-transformative approach to challenge and change the root causes of GBV, recognizing that it is deeply ingrained in social norms, gender biases, roles, and stereotypes. The consultant will be responsible for creating a safe space for discussions, providing theoretical and practical knowledge, and developing actionable strategies for participants to implement in their professional activities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The International Consultant will be responsible for the following tasks: 1) Develop and facilitate two three-day workshops in Astana and Almaty for representatives of CSOs on engaging men in gender equality and changing social norms related to GBV. This includes reviewing existing documents, developing a concept note and agenda, preparing presentations and materials, and facilitating the workshops. 2) Support a team leader in coordinating and facilitating a three-day regional workshop for representatives from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, focusing on addressing discriminatory gender social norms. This involves reviewing relevant literature, developing workshop materials, facilitating discussions, and preparing a detailed report on workshop outcomes. The consultant will also engage participants in collaborative problem-solving and skill-building activities.
Required Qualifications: The position requires extensive experience in gender equality, gender-based violence, and addressing discriminatory gender norms, with at least 10 years of relevant experience. The consultant should have a strong background in developing training materials on GBV issues, gender equality, and positive masculinity, as well as experience in creating situation analyses and policy documents related to the involvement of men and boys in promoting gender equality. Knowledge of the sexual and gender-based violence agenda, particularly in Central Asian countries, is essential, along with experience working with UN agencies or international organizations on similar assignments.
Educational Background: Candidates should possess higher education in humanities or related fields, with a master's degree being an advantage. A strong academic background in gender studies, social sciences, or a related discipline is preferred, as it will provide the necessary theoretical foundation for the role.
Experience: The consultant is expected to have a minimum of 10 years of experience in the fields of gender equality, gender-based violence, and working with MenEngage or related initiatives. This experience should include developing training materials, conducting workshops, and engaging with diverse cultural contexts to address gender norms and stereotypes effectively.
Languages: Proficiency in Russian is mandatory for this position, while knowledge of English is considered an advantage. The ability to communicate effectively in both languages will be crucial for facilitating workshops and engaging with participants from various backgrounds.
Additional Notes: The position is likely to be a consultancy role with a focus on full-time engagement during the workshop periods. The consultant will be expected to work collaboratively with local experts and stakeholders, ensuring that the workshops are tailored to the local context. UNFPA promotes a diverse and inclusive work environment, encouraging applications from individuals of various backgrounds, including women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and persons with disabilities. The organization emphasizes gender parity and equal opportunities in recruitment and training.
