Job Overview:
The position of Individual National Consultant for the First Foods Initiative involves supporting the scaling up of nutrition initiatives in Eritrea, particularly focusing on climate resilience and food system transformation. The consultant will work closely with the Ministry of Health and UNICEF to implement strategies aimed at improving young child diets and nutrition services. The role requires a strong commitment to capacity building among health workers and the establishment of monitoring systems to document progress and best practices. The consultant will also be responsible for developing climate-smart nutrition actions and ensuring integration across various sectors such as Food, WASH, Health, Social Protection, and Education. This position is crucial for advancing the nutrition agenda in Eritrea and requires collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including government ministries and UN agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for several key deliverables, including:
  • Capacity building of health workers at various levels in implementing the First Foods DMK initiative.
  • Establishing a monitoring system for the initiative and documenting lessons learned.
  • Supporting the production and distribution of fish powder for children aged 6 to 23 months.
  • Developing and implementing climate-smart nutrition actions.
  • Strengthening nutrition integration across multiple systems.
  • Collaborating with UN agencies and government ministries for joint nutrition programming.
  • Submitting an inception report with a detailed work plan, monitoring tools, and various progress reports on training, mapping exercises, and production initiatives.
  • Attending relevant technical working group meetings and documenting case stories.
  • Submitting a final report summarizing all activities and outcomes.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Development Studies, or related fields. A Master’s degree is considered an advantage. Additionally, candidates should have at least 5 years of progressive experience in Nutrition, Public Health, Food Systems, and Climate Change programming. Experience working with UNICEF or other UN agencies, as well as strong programming, coordination, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills, are essential. Candidates should also have experience in developing strategic documents and monitoring tools related to climate change and capacity building.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Development Studies, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred, indicating a higher level of expertise and understanding of the complexities involved in nutrition and public health initiatives.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in relevant fields such as Nutrition, Public Health, Food Systems, and Climate Change programming. Candidates should demonstrate a history of similar work with UNICEF, other UN agencies, or international organizations, showcasing their ability to manage and implement nutrition programs effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in English and the local language is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of other UN languages is considered an asset, enhancing communication and collaboration within the international framework of UNICEF.

Additional Notes:
This consultancy position is for a duration of 11 months and is classified as a national consultancy. Candidates must provide evidence of completion or exemption from national service, which is a requirement for application.
