Job Overview:
The Statistics and Monitoring Specialist (Demographics) position is situated within the Chief Statistician Office of UNICEF. The role is pivotal in leading the work on data, statistics, and analysis concerning demographics, particularly focusing on children affected by migration, displacement, and urbanization. The primary function is to enhance the quality, availability, accessibility, and utilization of demographic data across UNICEF and its partners. This involves guiding monitoring efforts related to migration, displacement, urbanization, and population, which includes developing measurement methodologies, data processing, analysis, reporting, and providing technical support to countries. The position requires collaboration with institutional partners, national governments, and organizations with expertise in demographics, ensuring that UNICEF's data-driven initiatives effectively address the needs of vulnerable children.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead data collection, analysis, and quality assurance on issues related to migrant and displaced children, as well as vulnerable children in urban settings.
- Develop and enhance measurement methodologies for demographic data.
- Provide capacity development and technical support to country offices in the area of demographics.
- Foster strategic partnerships and represent UNICEF in discussions related to demographic data and its implications for children.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure the effective use of data in decision-making processes.
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of demographic changes on children's rights and well-being.
- Prepare reports and presentations that communicate findings and recommendations to internal and external audiences.
Required Qualifications:
- Advanced University Degree (Master's or equivalent) in Statistics, Economics, Social Science, Mathematics, Demography, or related fields.
- At least 8 years of relevant work experience in Research, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Social Policy, Statistics, Data Analysis, or Demographics.
- Proficiency in data visualization and experience with household surveys, displacement data, and urbanization data.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex data sets.
Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as Statistics, Economics, Social Science, Mathematics, or Demography. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of demographic data and its implications for children.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience. This experience should encompass areas such as research, planning, monitoring and evaluation, social policy, statistics, data analysis, and demographics. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with data in a way that informs policy and programmatic decisions, particularly in relation to children's rights and welfare.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) or a local language is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and communities.
