Job Overview: The Technical Senior Analyst – Environmental position is designed to support the Global Programme on Nature for Development, focusing on helping governments utilize spatial data in their conservation plans and monitoring efforts. The role involves working with multiple countries to develop approaches that identify essential life support areas (ELSAs) for effective biodiversity, climate, and sustainable development actions. The incumbent will provide GIS expertise and support the development of web-based systematic conservation planning tools tailored to the specific needs of each country, particularly Colombia. The position requires collaboration with technical teams to adapt existing web tools, conduct training sessions, and ensure the smooth functioning of these tools during workshops and meetings. The role is critical in advancing the use of spatial data for conservation planning and engaging with national stakeholders to understand their needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop a customized spatial prioritization web tool for Colombia, coordinating with the technical team to adapt the WhereToWork web tool according to local guidelines.
Assist in organizing and preparing datasets for the web tool, generating scenarios for analysis, and conducting training for the Colombia team.
Set up repositories and data for new countries on the server, ensuring smooth functioning through checks and tests.
Host and maintain the ELSA web tool, managing updates and assisting with code versioning in collaboration with UNDP and UNICC.
Troubleshoot issues with the web tool and support the Spatial Planner and Lead Scientist in resolving them.
Coordinate meetings with national stakeholders to gather input for web tool development and ensure effective project coordination.
Attend workshops and working group sessions to facilitate the use of the web tool and gather feedback for improvements.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in environmental management/sciences, conservation biology/ecology, geography, natural resource management, computer science/software engineering, or a related field. A Bachelor’s degree in these fields may be accepted if accompanied by four years of relevant work experience. Candidates with no prior experience in the United Nations or UNOPS are strongly encouraged to apply, as are female candidates.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree is preferred, but a Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields is acceptable with sufficient work experience. The educational background should ideally encompass areas related to environmental management, conservation, or computer science, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the role.
Experience: A minimum of two years of work or academic experience is required, ideally in areas such as international environmental policy, natural resource management, biodiversity, climate change, or civil society engagement. Experience should demonstrate a conceptual or practical understanding of these topics, showcasing the candidate's ability to contribute effectively to the role.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficiency in additional languages is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
Additional Notes: The contract type is an Individual Contractor Agreement (ICA), with levels classified as International Individual Contractor Agreement (IICA-1) or Local Individual Contractor Agreement (LICA-9).
