Job Overview:
The internship opportunity is situated within the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes at the ESA Centre for Earth Observation (ESRIN) in Frascati, Italy. The Copernicus Space Office plays a crucial role in coordinating ESA's Copernicus activities, ensuring effective collaboration with the European Commission, and overseeing the Copernicus Space Component (CSC). Interns will engage in significant tasks that include monitoring Copernicus activities, preparing programmatic documents, and supporting outreach and communication efforts. The internship focuses on supporting ESA's efforts to analyze the socio-economic benefits of the Sentinel missions, which are vital for strategic advocacy and communication activities related to Copernicus.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for conducting desk research and attending conferences to document significant users and applications of Copernicus Sentinel data. They will analyze and report on promising case studies within selected user communities and application areas, which may include topics such as green transition and environmental compliance. Additionally, interns will support the Copernicus User Expert in assessing the socio-economic and regulatory benefits generated by the use of Sentinel data, contributing to the Sentinel Benefits Observatory, and validating findings relevant to EU and international policies. This role will provide interns with a comprehensive understanding of ESA's role in Copernicus, core Sentinel applications, and the benefits derived from these initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master's level course. They must remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship. A good knowledge of English or French is required, and knowledge of another Member State language is considered an asset. Additionally, candidates should have a background in sustainable development and impact assessments, as well as experience with Copernicus data or derived products, which would be advantageous.
Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to be enrolled in a university program, ideally pursuing a Master's degree. This educational background is essential to ensure that interns possess the necessary theoretical knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the tasks assigned during the internship.
Experience:
The internship is designed for students who may not have extensive professional experience but should ideally have some familiarity with Copernicus data and its applications. Experience in research, particularly in socio-economic assessments or environmental studies, would be beneficial but is not mandatory.
Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is mandatory for the position. Knowledge of additional languages from ESA member states would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate and collaborate in a diverse international environment.
