Job Overview:
The position of Local Researcher is integral to a fisheries sector study aimed at mapping and analyzing the key players and market dynamics within Yemen's fisheries private sector. This study will cover the entire value chain, from small-scale fishers to larger companies, with the goal of enhancing the economic situation in the region. The Local Researcher will be responsible for collecting data from various stakeholders in the fisheries sector, including fishers, processors, and traders. This data will be crucial for identifying challenges and opportunities within the fisheries value chain, ultimately contributing to improved local food resilience and a reduction in the national trade balance deficit. The researcher will work closely with the Focal Point and the International Advisor to ensure that the data collected is comprehensive and actionable, supporting informed decision-making and investments in the fisheries sector.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Local Researcher will have several key responsibilities, including:
- Data Collection: Engaging with local fishers, processors, traders, and other actors in the fisheries value chain to gather relevant data as directed by the Focal Point.
- Mapping Market Actors: Identifying and mapping out key market actors and their roles within the fisheries value chain to understand the dynamics at play.
- Data Analysis: Collaborating with the Focal Point and International Advisor to analyze the collected data, developing findings and recommendations aimed at enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of the fisheries value chain.
- Reporting: Preparing and submitting organized reports in the agreed format to the Focal Point, ensuring clarity and comprehensiveness.
- Follow-Up: Participating in follow-up interviews and additional data collection as necessary to refine the understanding of the fisheries sector.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma in a relevant discipline, with a preference for higher education in related fields. Prior experience in data collection or research within the fisheries or agriculture sectors is essential, particularly experience with qualitative research methods such as focus group discussions. Familiarity with international organizations or development projects is highly desirable, along with a strong understanding of the fisheries sector and its value chain dynamics. Proficiency in both spoken and written English and Arabic is required, as well as advanced computer literacy, especially in virtual communication tools like Teams and Zoom. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and maintain excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes at least a high school diploma in a relevant field, with a preference for candidates who have pursued higher education in disciplines related to fisheries, agriculture, or social sciences. This educational foundation will support the researcher's ability to engage effectively with stakeholders and understand the complexities of the fisheries value chain.
Experience:
The ideal candidate should have prior experience in data collection or research, particularly in the fisheries or agriculture sectors. Experience with qualitative research methods, such as conducting focus group discussions and engaging diverse stakeholders, is crucial. Additionally, familiarity with international organizations or development projects will be advantageous, as it indicates an understanding of the operational context in which the researcher will be working.
Languages:
Proficiency in both English and Arabic is mandatory for this position, as the researcher will need to communicate effectively with local stakeholders and report findings in both languages. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.

The contract will cover 20 working days over a two-month period, with specific working days scheduled based on project needs and deliverable deadlines.
