Job Overview:
The internship position at UNCTAD is designed to provide students or recent graduates with practical experience in the workings of the United Nations. Interns are expected to work full-time, five days a week, for the duration of the internship, which runs from January 13, 2025, to April 18, 202
- The internship can be conducted in-person in Geneva or remotely, depending on the successful candidate's preference. Interns will be involved in various tasks related to the International Investment Agreements (IIAs) Section of the Division on Investment and Enterprise (DIAE). They will gain exposure to UNCTAD's activities, including research, intergovernmental meetings, and technical assistance to governments, particularly those from developing countries. The internship aims to enhance the educational experience of the interns while contributing to the work of UNCTAD.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: conducting research on bilateral investment treaties (BITs) and treaties with investment provisions (TIPs); collecting data on investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) cases; monitoring investment policy trends and developments; updating IIAs mapping in accordance with UNCTAD’s Investment Policy Framework for Sustainable Development; assisting in the organization and preparation of intergovernmental meetings; conducting background research for technical assistance delivery; organizing capacity-building activities; proofreading and editing publications; updating the Investment Policy Hub website; and preparing inputs for reporting on program activities. Interns are also expected to adhere to UN rules and regulations, respect confidentiality, and maintain impartiality throughout their internship.
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Additionally, interns should be computer literate in standard software applications, demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, and possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. No prior work experience is required, but a field of study related to the internship is necessary.
Educational Background:
Candidates must be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program or the final year of an undergraduate program. This educational background should ideally be in a field related to international relations, economics, law, or a similar discipline that aligns with the work of UNCTAD.
Experience:
No prior work experience is required for this internship position. However, candidates should possess relevant academic training or skills that would benefit the United Nations during their internship. This could include coursework, projects, or volunteer experiences related to international trade, investment, or development.
Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Spanish, Arabic, or Russian, is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's application.
