Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) was established in 1964 and is a part of the United Nations Secretariat. Its mission is to promote the integration of developing countries into the world economy. UNCTAD operates in over 190 countries and has a workforce of approximately 1,000 employees. The organization focuses on trade, investment, and development issues, providing research, policy analysis, and technical assistance to developing nations.

Job Overview:
The internship position at UNCTAD is designed to provide students or recent graduates with practical experience in the field of trade and development. Interns will work full-time, either remotely or in-person, and are expected to engage in various tasks that support the Commodities Branch of the Division on International Trade and Commodities (DITC). The internship will last for six months, starting from November 25, 2024, and will involve training and mentoring to enhance the intern's educational experience. Interns will assist in compiling data and conducting research on trade in commodities, contributing to the preparation of documents and publications, and supporting the overall activities of the branch. This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in gaining insight into the workings of the United Nations and the complexities of international trade.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Compiling information and data related to trade in commodities, focusing on economic diversification and development implications.
  • Conducting both quantitative and qualitative research to support the branch's objectives.
  • Drafting short reports and creating visual aids such as charts and graphs as directed by supervisors.
  • Providing substantive support for the preparation of presentations, letters, project documents, and assessments.
  • Assisting with proofreading and editing of publications to ensure clarity and accuracy.
  • Supporting other activities of the Commodities Branch as needed. Interns must also adhere to UN regulations and maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet specific qualifications to be considered for the internship. They should be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program or be in the final year of a bachelor's degree program. Additionally, candidates should possess computer literacy in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations. A commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter and the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds are essential. No prior work experience is required, but a degree in economics, development, law, political science, or related social sciences is preferred.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in or completion of a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent) or being in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level). Candidates should ideally be pursuing studies in economics, international relations, or trade-related fields, which will provide a solid foundation for the tasks they will undertake during the internship.

Experience:
This internship does not require any prior work experience, making it an ideal opportunity for students or recent graduates looking to gain practical experience in the field of international trade and development. The focus is on enhancing the educational experience of the intern rather than requiring extensive professional background.

Languages:
Fluency in both oral and written English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is considered desirable, as it may enhance communication and collaboration within the diverse environment of the United Nations.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid, and all costs related to travel, accommodation, medical insurance, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern. Interns must have a valid visa for in-person internships and are required to have access to a computer with the latest version of Microsoft Office 365 applications for remote work. The application process includes submitting a complete online application, including a Cover Note and Personal History Profile. Candidates will be assessed based on their profiles, and only successful applicants will be contacted. It is important to note that there is no expectation of employment with the UN following the internship, and interns are not eligible to apply for professional-level positions within six months after the internship ends.
